Abstract:
Millennials are the generation that lived in the era of information technology revolution with the emergence of the internet and smart phones. Because of this experience, millennial has become an important element for human resources to meet industry 4.0. However, it is not clear how older leadership behaves on this generation and what impact they have on organizational performance. Survey is conducted on 224 millennial employees working in various companies in Indonesia. Data are analyzed using Smart-PLS 3.0 based on structural equation modeling (SEM). Our results showed that openness to millennial employee style had a positive effect on 4.0 organizational performance partially mediat-ed by 4.0 leadership effectiveness in industrial settings. These results confirm the role of millennial in shaping organizational performance and how managers need to implement appropriate measures to manage millennials and be open to various characteristics of this generation.

Mediation role of responsible innovation between CSR strategy and competitive advantage: Empirical evidence for the case of Saudi Arabia enterprises Pages 747-762 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Tarek Bel Hadj, Anis Omri, Ahmad Al-Tit

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2019.10.022

🔑 Keywords: Corporate social responsibility, Reactive CSR, Strategic CSR, Responsible innovation, Competitive advantage

Abstract:
This study examines whether responsible innovation can be an important channel through which the corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy influences the competitive advantage of the firm. Specifically, we tried to test the role of firm size and activity sector as conditional factors in the mediation of responsible innovation between CSR strategy and the competitive advantage for the case of Saudi Arabia enterprises. Based on structural equation modelling (SEM), our results show that responsible innovation is a key element of the sustainable business model since it determines the success of CSR strategy in boosting the competitive advantage of firms. In this model, the mediation of responsible innovation is moderated differently by the firm size and the activity sector, and it is dependent on the choice between strategic or reactive CSR strategy. Within this context, we also find that the indirect effects of the CSR strategy on competitive advantage are moderated by the firm size in the case of reactive CSR, whereas by the activity sector in case of strategic CSR. The originality of this paper is that it examines whether the competitive advantage of firms in a developing country is more dependent on the reactive CSR strategy or the strategic CSR strategy. It also proposes an empirical investigation into the conditional factors of responsible innovation and their effects on the relationship between CSR strategy and competitive advantage.

Authors: Fahad Awad Aber Sawaean, Khairul Anuar Mohd Ali

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2019.10.018

🔑 Keywords: Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL), Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Total Quality Management (TQM), Organizational Performance

Abstract:
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role for the economic development of most countries, particularly in developing economies such as Kuwait. There are, however, challenges and problems that have to be addressed in an effort to achieve a better performance and ensure longer-term success. In the pursuit of entrepreneurial leadership (EL), SMEs frequently adopt total quality management (TQM) practices as their key strategies to enhance their competitive advantage. However, there is a dearth of studies that investigate the relationship of these concepts with the performance SMEs in developing countries. This paper seeks to examine the association between determinants of organizational performance, such as entrepreneurial leadership (EL) and TQM practices, of Kuwait's SMEs. This study uses a quantitative method. A survey questionnaire is administered to collect data from 500 SME owners and CEOs in Kuwait, and 384 are found to be usable. The outcomes of this study show beneficial and considerable influence of entrepreneurial leadership and TQM practices on organizational performance. The association of entrepreneurial leadership with organizational performance of SMEs is fundamentally mediated by TQM practices.

The cross-sectional design method was used in this study, and the data were collected from a customer survey with randomly selected 244 respondents using an online questionnaire. The perceived crowding was revealed as the most influential variable on the emotions. We also found a direct effect of perceived crowding and store image on repurchase intention. Furthermore, the high-density retail condition shoppers tend to feel pleased with the shopping environment and give a positive appraisal to the store image. But unfortunately, a high-density retail condition could discourage the shoppers to have repurchase intention. Interestingly, when the emotions were used as a mediating variable of perceived crowding and repurchase intention, those independent variables affected on repurchase intention, positively. Therefore, the shoppers' emotions were the most important factor affected on repurchase intention in modern retail. Do foreign chief executive officers perform better than local ones? Pages 815-822 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Sali Alnahdi

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2019.10.016

🔑 Keywords: Foreign chief executive officers, Performance, Saudi Arabia, Return on assets

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between the presence of the foreign chief executive officer (CEO) as a director of a firm and firm performance in Saudi Arabia. Performance is measured in terms of a business’ profitability proxy, return on assets (ROA), and the market performance measure, Tobin’s Q. Herein, we use a sample of non-financial companies that have been listed in Saudi Arabia between 2005 and 2016. The results reveal that firms managed by a local CEO outperform firms helmed by their foreign counterparts. They also support the notion that the success of managing directors in emerging markets requires cultural and intercultural skills.
