The role of high performance work practices, work-family conflict, job stress and personality in affecting work life balance Pages 1367-1378 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Nida Zahoor, Nor Azimah Chew Abdullah, Nazlina Zakaria

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2020.11.003

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Banks, High performance work practices, Job stress, Pakistan, Personality, Work-family conflict, Work-life balance

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to identify the role of high performance work practices of banks, work-family conflict, job stress, and personality of bank employees in affecting their work-life balance. To accomplish this goal, self-administered structured questionnaires were distributed to those bank employees who were either married, divorced, or separated, had children, and at least one year working experience in that bank. Final sample was comprised of 726 employees from 277 banks of South Punjab. The results revealed that high performance work practices of banks, family to work conflict, and personality type B behavioral patterns of bank employees increase their work-life balance, and work to family conflict of bank employees decreased their work-life balance. However, job stress and personality type A behavioral patterns of bank employees did not affect their work-life balance. Contrary to previous studies, these results suggest that moderate family to work conflict is actually good for work-life balance, and job stress and personality type A behavioral patterns are inherently not bad for work-life balance. Hence, State Bank of Pakistan should consider developing policies to enhance employee friendly high performance work practices in banks. Banks should also consider taking personality tests prior to recruiting and selecting employees for hectic posts.

Authors: Aamar Ilyas, Ramraini Ali Hassan, Ahmed Hussain Khan, Waris Ali Khan

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2020.8.004

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Illegitimate tasks, Job satisfaction, Stress-As-Offense-to-Self, Informal employee, Pakistan

Abstract:
This study addresses the illegitimate task-related stressor that establishes a threat to the employeesโ€™ self-image. The objective of this study is to provide a clear picture on how illegitimate tasks impact on employeesโ€™ mind who work in micro informal enterprises. No single study examined this relationship among employees of informal enterprises. An active employee of micro informal enterprises (MIEโ€™s) within Lahore city is the unit of analysis of this study. The questionnaire of the study was sent to 500 employees of informal enterprises. Participants were 425 full-time employees in informal enterprises at various position levels, representing an 85 percent response rate. SPSS 21 and AMOS 16 statistical packages were used to analyze the collected data. Normality of variables was checked with the help of Skewness and Kurtosis scores. To test the hypotheses of this study, structural equation modeling (SEM) was implemented. The analysis comprises confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings of this study show that illegitimate tasks also boost the stress level of employees who work in informal entrepreneurship. Consequently, owners and managers of MIE should organize and design such training programs that increase the level of understanding about assigned tasks.

doi 10.5267/j.ac.2022.10.001

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Financial performance, Capital regulation, Commercial banks, Pakistan, Basel Accords

Abstract:
The Pakistani banking sector has shown tremendous growth in the last two decades and witnessed strategic reforms including the implementation of Basel regulations. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Basel capital regulations on the various proxies of the financial performance of the Pakistani commercial banks. This study uses three different proxies to assess the effectiveness of the Basel capital regulations on the financial performance of Pakistani commercial banks from 2006 to 2018 and quantifies the effect of different Basel accords on the banking sector of Pakistan using the dynamic panel data estimation technique. In addition, the effect of the Global Financial Crisis (2008) on the financial performance of Pakistani banks has also been evaluated. The results indicate that Basel II and Basel III capital regulations have affected the banksโ€™ profitability differently. Capital regulations of Basel II have increased the performance while capital requirements of Basel III have not affected the financial performance of Pakistani banks, pointing towards the ineffectiveness of Basel III capital regulations. Besides, there has been no change observed in the financial performance of Pakistani banks during the Global Financial Crisis (2008). Overall, the results of the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) technique show that Basel capital regulations enhance the financial performance of the Pakistani banking sector.

Firms with the higher-level implementation of TQM will be more successful in the international market and can achieve better export performance. Thus, the study reveals that TQM is a valuable and dynamic intangible resource which can increase the SME export perfor-mance. The study presented the relationship between TQM and SME export performance and pro-vided some insights for the practitioners and the researchers. In other words, practitioners and re-searchers will be able to make a better decision about the implementation of TQM. Furthermore, the current study contributed to the literature of TQM and SME export performance, empirically. The absence of TQM can affect the firm performance in the international market.

The moderating role of directorโ€™s financial expertise in political connections and corporate financial performance in Pakistan Pages 865-874 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Murtaza Masud Niazi, Zaleha Othman, Sitraselvi Chandren

doi 10.5267/j.ac.2021.1.022

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Political connection, financial performance, directorsโ€™ financial expertise, political economy, Pakistan

Abstract:
Prior theoretical and empirical studies have suggested that political influence affects the application of corporate governance and firm performance enormously. However, several fundamental questions remain to be answered. To fill this knowledge gap,the study's main objectives are examining the direct impact of political connection on firm financial performance in Pakistani non-financial listed companies and the moderating effect of director's financial expertise on political connections and firm financial performance. The study utilised panel data of 220 firms from 2008 to 2017 and used panel corrected standard error regression analysis. The results show that political connection negatively impacted firm financial performance, and director financial expertise as a moderator strengthened the relationship between political connections and firm financial performance. This study's results supported political economy theory in that weak judicial systems and unstable political systems have immense effects on investorโ€™s rights. The study contributes to extending the existing literature on political connection by providing evidence of the impact of politically connected firms on firm performance in an emerging market. The study also deliberates on how the directorโ€™s financial expertise contributes towards the relationship. The findings could be generalised to other countries with similar degrees of development and culture.
