The role of SMEs is crucial in most of the countries of the world and they contribute significantly towards provision of employment opportunities in their local communities and development of their economies. The main objective of this study is to examine the factors influencing the performance of SMEs in the UAE. The findings from the analysis found that technological factors and environmental factors have a positive and significant impact on SMEs performance. This study has a significant contribution to the body of literature as it provides a worthy theoretical framework in it. Besides theoretical contribution, this study also provides practical implications to SMEs, government and policymakers. The future direction of this study would enhance the future body of literature.

Authors: Edy Yulianto

DOI: 10.5267/j.msl.2021.5.006

Keywords: Open Innovation, Innovation, Environmental Turbulence, SMEs Performance, Introduction

Abstract:
Open innovation has been identified as two dimensions, the flow of knowledge obtained from outside and processed within the organization and has a role as a key business responsiveness to prevent any risks that will be faced. From this knowledge flow is a successful approach to new product development featuring outbound and inbound knowledge that is managed with the aim of getting out of the bounds of risk. Therefore, this study investigates and explains the clausal relationship between the variables used, such as inbound and outbound open innovation, product innovation, marketing innovation, firm performance, and environmental turbulence as moderating variables. This study uses a quantitative approach and designs a questionnaire that has been distributed to 115 SMEs owner / managers as a sample. In the process of formal data collection, a random sample was used in this study which was distributed to the owner / manager of SMEs. While the processing, analysis, and hypothesis testing process of this study uses PLS-SEM which is a statistical tool for applying all data scales, does not require many assumptions, and confirms relationships. The findings in this study indicate that what has a positive and significant effect is the relationship of inbound open innovation to product innovation, product innovation to marketing innovation, marketing innovation to firm performance. In addition, the moderating effect of environmental turbulence in a positive way is only product innovation on firm performance. Further explanation of the implications of the findings has been discussed and confirmed.

Authors: Muhamad Robith Alil Fahmi, Edy Yulianto

DOI: 10.5267/j.msl.2021.3.002

Keywords: Knowledge Management Capability, Innovation Type, SMEs Performance

Abstract:
Knowledge-Based View as an intangible resource for the company will become the knowledge capability it possesses. Particularly in the context of SMEs in developing countries like Indonesia, SMEs have a big role in contributing to the country's economy. Therefore, knowledge capability is a resource that must be owned by SMEs that should be able to encourage adopting this type of innovation. In accordance with the basis of Knowledge-Based View, this knowledge will have an impact on company performance and its competitive advantage through the types of innovations that have been adopted. The quantitative method was used by distributing questionnaires totaling 120 SMEs in Indonesia and the data were processed using PLS-SEM. This study has a hypothesis that the relationship between knowledge management capability has a positive and significant effect on firm performance, as well as the mediating role of the type of innovation. The results in this study indicate that knowledge management capability does not have a significant effect on firm performance. However, the relationship between knowledge management capability shows that it has a significant effect on marketing, product, process, and service innovation. Discussions related to these results are also explained by implication factors in this study.

Abstract:
SMEs as a type of business have a high dependence on their owners and it is important for their owners to have entrepreneurial resilience and supply chain resilience. The main objective of this study is to determine the effect of entrepreneurial resilience and supply chain resilience on SMEs performance. The data were collected via a survey to 286 SMEs owners in Indonesia, especially culinary, fashion and craft businesses. SEM-PLS was used for data analysis. As a result, with the presence of supply chain resilience as a mediator, it turns out that entrepreneurial resilience has a stronger influence on SMEs performance. This shows that supply chain resilience also deserves attention to be owned by SMEs owners to achieve SMEs performance. Entrepreneur resilience and supply chain resilience owned by SMEs owners make it easier for SMEs in Indonesia to face increasingly fierce competition, uncertain business conditions to get optimal organizational performance.
