Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is a compound system containing essentials like workplac-es, computerized storing and recovery systems, and material control devices such as automatons and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). In this paper, an attempt is made to study concurrently the machine and vehicle planning features in an FMS for minimization of the makespan. Planning is concerned with the distribution of partial resources to tasks over time and it is a resolution making procedure. It associates the processes, time, cost and overall purposes of the company. In this work, Nawaz-Enscore-Ham (NEH) heuristic algorithm is implemented to solve the scheduling problems in FMS. Eighty two problems and their existing solutions with different approaches are examined. The preliminary results indicate that the NEH heuristic algorithm provides better solu-tions with less computational time.

This paper aims at presenting an algorithm for solving the blocking flow shop problem with sequence dependent setup times (BFSP-SDST) with minimization of the makespan. In order to do so, we propose an adapted Bounded Dynamic Programming (BDP-SN) algorithm as solution method, since the problem itself does not present a significant number of sources in the state-of-art references and also because Dynamic Programming and its variants have been resurfacing in the flowshop literature. Therefore, we apply the modified method to two sets of problems and compare the results computationally and statistically for instances with a MILP and a B&B method for at most 20 jobs and 20 machines. The results show that BDP-SN is promising and outperforms both MILP and B&B within the established time limit. In addition, some suggestions are made in order to improve the method and employ it in parallel research regarding other branches of machine scheduling.

This study contributes to the hybrid flow shop due to a lack of consideration of characteristics existing in real-world problems. Prior studies are neglecting identical machines, explicit and sequence-dependent setup times, and machine blocking. We propose a hybrid genetic algorithm to solve the problem. Furthermore, we also propose a mixed-integer linear programming formulation. We note a predominance of the mathematical model for small instances, with five jobs and three machines because of how fast there is convergence. The objective function adopted is to minimize the makespan, and relative deviation is used as a performance criterion. Our proposal incorporates two metaheuristics in this process: a genetic algorithm to generate sequences (the flow shop subproblem) and a GRASP to allocate the jobs in the machines (the parallel machines subproblem). The extensive computational experience carried out shows that the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm is a promising procedure to solve large-sized instances.

No-wait flow shop scheduling refers to continuous flow of jobs through different machines. The job once started should have the continuous processing through the machines without wait. This situation occurs when there is a lack of an intermediate storage between the processing of jobs on two consecutive machines. The problem of no-wait with the objective of minimizing makespan in flow shop scheduling is NP-hard; therefore the heuristic algorithms are the key to solve the problem with optimal solution or to approach nearer to optimal solution in simple manner. The paper describes two heuristics, one constructive and an improvement heuristic algorithm obtained by modifying the constructive one for sequencing n-jobs through m-machines in a flow shop under no-wait constraint with the objective of minimizing makespan. The efficiency of the proposed heuristic algorithms is tested on 120 Taillard’s benchmark problems found in the literature against the NEH under no-wait and the MNEH heuristic for no-wait flow shop problem. The improvement heuristic outperforms all heuristics on the Taillard’s instances by improving the results of NEH by 27.85%, MNEH by 22.56% and that of the proposed constructive heuristic algorithm by 24.68%. To explain the computational process of the proposed algorithm, numerical illustrations are also given in the paper. Statistical tests of significance are done in order to draw the conclusions.

In this paper we investigate the use of lot streaming in non-permutation flowshop scheduling problems. The objective is to minimize the makespan subject to the standard flowshop constraints, but where it is now permitted to reorder jobs between machines. In addition, the jobs can be divided into manageable sublots, a strategy known as lot streaming. Computational experiments show that lot streaming reduces the makespan up to 43% for a wide range of instances when compared to the case in which no job splitting is applied. The benefits grow as the number of stages in the production process increases but reach a limit. Beyond a certain point, the division of jobs into additional sublots does not improve the solution.

Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) is considered as an important project scheduling problem. However, increasing dimensions of a project, whether in number of activities or resource availability, cause unused resources through the planning horizon. Such phenomena may increase makespan of a project and also decline resource-usage efficiency. To solve this problem, many methods have been proposed before. In this article, an effective backward-forward search method (BFSM) is proposed using Greedy algorithm that is employed as a part of a hybrid with a two-stage genetic algorithm (BFSM-GA). The proposed method is explained using some related examples from literature and the results are then compared with a forward serial programming method. In addition, the performance of the proposed method is measured using a mathematical metric. Our findings show that the proposed approach can provide schedules with good quality for both small and large scale problems.

Global competition pressures have forced manufactures to adapt their productive capabilities. In order to satisfy the ever-changing market demands many organizations adopted flexible resources capable of executing several products with different performance criteria. The unrelated parallel-machines makespan minimization problem (Rm||Cmax) is known to be NP-hard or too complex to be solved exactly. In the heuristics used for this problem, the MCT (Minimum Completion Time), which is the base for several others, allocates tasks in a random like order to the minimum completion time machine. This paper proposes an ordered approach to the MCT heuristic. MOMCT (Modified Ordered Minimum Completion Time) will order tasks in accordance to the MS index, which represents the mean difference of the completion time on each machine and the one on the minimum completion time machine. The computational study demonstrates the improved performance of MOMCT over the MCT heuristic.

Scheduling ‘n’ jobs on ‘m’ machines in a flow shop is NP- hard problem and places itself at prominent place in the area of production scheduling. The essence of any scheduling algorithm is to minimize the makespan in a flowshop environment. In this paper an attempt has been made to develop a heuristic algorithm, based on the reduced weightage of machines at each stage to generate different combination of ‘m-1’ sequences. The proposed heuristic has been tested on several benchmark problems of Taillard (1993) [Taillard, E. (1993). Benchmarks for basic scheduling problems. European Journal of Operational Research, 64, 278-285.]. The performance of the proposed heuristic is compared with three well-known heuristics, namely Palmer’s heuristic, Campbell’s CDS heuristic, and Dannenbring’s rapid access heuristic. Results are evaluated with the best-known upper-bound solutions and found better than the above three.

Job shop has been considered as one of the most challenging scheduling problems and there are literally tremendous efforts on reducing the complexity of solution procedure for solving job shop problem. This paper presents a heuristic method to minimize makespan for different jobs in a job shop scheduling. The proposed model is based on a constructive procedure to obtain good quality schedules, very quickly. The performance of the proposed model of this paper is examined on standard benchmarks from the literature in order to evaluate its performance. Computational results show that, despite its simplicity, the proposed heuristic is computationally efficient and practical approach for the problem.

The problem of generating a train schedule for a single-track railway system is addressed in this paper. A three stage scheduling is proposed to reduce the total train tardiness. We derived an appropriate job-shop scheduling algorithm called DR-algorithm. In the first stage, by determining appropriate weights of the dispatching rules, a pre-schedule is constructed. In the second stage, on the basis of the pre-schedule, the departure times of the trains are modified to reduce the number of conflicts in using railway sections by different trains. In the third stage, a train speed control helps the scheduler to change the trains’ speeds in order to reduce the train tardiness and to reach other objectives. The factual train schedule is based on the modified train speeds and on the modified departure times of the trains. The experimental running of the DR-algorithm on the benchmark instances showed this algorithm can solve train scheduling problems in a close to optimal way. In particular, the total train tardiness was reduced about 20% due to controlling train speeds and the departure times of the trains.
