The effect of curriculum design on the employability competency of Malaysian graduates Pages 909-914 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Farahana Misni, Nik Hasnaa Nik Mahmood, Rossilah Jamil

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2019.10.005

🔑 Keywords: Curriculum design, Employability competency, Graduates, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)

Abstract:
For a country to support the transition of all economic sectors to a knowledge-driven one, attract foreign investment, and drive labor productivity, it is necessary to have access to skilled workforce. However, there is currently an insufficient talent supply and the workforce demand does not match the talent supply because of low graduate employability stemming from the low quality of higher education in Malaysia. To address this issue, this study proposed a conceptual framework to illustrate the perception of graduates towards the impact of curriculum design, the curriculum vision, the operationalization of the curriculum vision, the curriculum delivery, and curriculum evaluation, on employability competency. A sample of 299 employed graduates participated in this research. Smart Partial Least-Squares (SmartPLS) version 3 software was used to evaluate the hypotheses of the survey. The findings of this study reveal that curriculum design positively and significantly influenced employability competency. Hence, this study contributes important insights into the implementation of effective curriculum design, striking a balance between practical and theoretical bases, in private and public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Linking employee engagement towards individual work performance through human resource management practice: From high potential employee’s perspectives Pages 1083-1092 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Siti Amirah Othman, Nik Hasnaa Nik Mahmood

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2019.3.016

🔑 Keywords: Employee engagement, Human resource management practices, Individual work performance, High potential employees

Abstract:
Most previous studies of employee engagement and performance have been rooted in either Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) or the Social Exchange Theory (SET), giving often inconclusive outcomes. In fact, there are only a few researchers in social science focusing on the level of high po-tential employee’s engagement towards individual work performance through human resource management practices. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between employee engagement and individual work performance with mediation role of human resource management (HRM) practices for selected manufacturing organizations in Malaysia. Two hundred and fifty-two usable questionnaires are collected to empirically test the hypotheses using IBM SPSS software and Smart Partial Least Square (SmartPLS) version 3. The results suggest that high potential employee engagement positively and significantly influence on individuals’ work performance. Additionally, human resource management practices play significant role in mediating the relationship between employee engagement and individual work performance among high potential employees. There-fore, these results should provide insight towards managing high potential employees, especially in the manufacturing sector.
