Implementation of 5S practices: A review Pages 155-162 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Jagtar Singh, Vikas Rastogi, Richa Sharma

Keywords: 5S, Availability, Efficiency, Housekeeping, Total Productive Maintenance, Total Quality Management

Abstract:
5S is a systematic technique used by organizations come from five Japanese words; Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu(standardize) and Shitsuke (sustain). This system helps to organize a workplace for efficiency and decrease non value added activities and optimize quality and productivity through monitoring an organized environment. This paper aims to review previous studies about benefits of 5S Implementation and its efficiency in organizations. The results show that 5S is an effective tool for improvement of organizational performance, regardless of organization type, size, its production or its service. Consequently, 5S technique would strongly support the objectives of organization to achieve continuous improvement in performance and productivity.

A new approach to evaluate railways efficiency considering safety measures Pages 71-80 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Ali Noroozzadeh, Seyed Jafar Sadjadi

DOI: 10.5267/j.dsl.2013.02.003

Keywords: Data envelopment analysis, Efficiency, Railroad industry

Abstract:
Safety is one of the main reasons for choosing railway to other transportation modes and improvement of transportation safety has attracted many researchers in recent years. In this paper, we aim to investigate the influence of safety measures on railways performance evaluation, empirically. The proposed model of this paper uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) to estimate the railways efficiency scores in the presence of safety measure. According to three proposed factors, the most appropriate model is selected to compare its result with output-oriented DEA model. The results of the survey are surprising since inefficient railroads become efficient through adding undesirable outputs in evaluation model.

Measuring the units efficiency using an integrated DEA–AHP method: A case study of rivet producer Pages 189-196 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Azim Zarei, Amir Mehdiabadi, Mojtaba Javidnia

DOI: 10.5267/j.msl.2011.09.006

Keywords: Analytical hierarchy process, Data envelopment analysis, DEA-AHP, Efficiency

Abstract:
The present research purpose is applying a compose method from DEA and AHP for removing this technique deficiency on assessing. For this reason, a compose method on basis of unsubjective double comparisons matrix has been used. At research process, after specifying the input and output variables and also a proper model for DEA, computational research method are dismounted at two stages: At the first stage, DEA model, is dismounted for two-by –two of items (branches), regardless to other items. At the second stage, double items comparisons matrix is provided from first stage results, that is performed total rating by resolving a unit – level AHP model. For this purpose, for dismounting this technique, we have attempted to assess rivet producer units efficiency, at one of the greatest industrial units in Iran. Results indicate unit number 3 with efficiency amount 0.12622 has allocated the highest rate to own and unit number 1 and 2 with efficiency 0.12404 has allocated the least rates to own.

The aim of this research is to examine the propensity to outsourcing and its impacts on operational objectives including cost reduction, improved quality, flexibility and better service and organizational performance, which includes financial performance and non-financial performance. In the research, data are collected through field research and questionnaires. The questionnaires are distributed among the board of directors, quality managers, operational administrators, and lower managers and then the feedbacks are analyzed using SPSS and Minitab software based on deductive and descriptive statistics.

Improving efficiency of decision making units through BSC-DEA technique Pages 245-252 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Amir Reza Khaki, Seyed Esmaeel Najafi, Sadra Rashidi

DOI: 10.5267/j.msl.2011.08.016

Keywords: BSC-DEA, Data envelopment analysis, Decision making groups, Efficiency

Abstract:
Performance evaluation is one of the most important techniques to prioritize different decision making units. Data envelopment analysis (DEA), as a non-parametric method, plays an important role for measuring relative efficiency. Balanced score card, on the other hand, is another method to evaluate a business plan based on non-financial perspectives. The integrated BSC-DEA takes advantage of the advantages of both methods & apos; features. In this paper, we propose a BSC-DEA method to rank different decision making units. We consider different financial criteria such as profit-margin, return on assets along with non-financial criteria such as customer satisfaction, advanced services, employee skills to compare the performance of different banks. The results are analyzed and discussed, which could be used for making better decisions.

Abstract:
Empowering workers play an essential role on increasing productivity in any organization. The service industries such as insurance companies or banks mostly rely on their own people to retain their customers and incomes. The recent increasing trend on the number of private banks in Iran has increased competition among existing banks. The banking industry strives to empower its employees as much as possible in an attempt to maintain market share by not losing its customers. In this paper, we present an empirical study to detect the most important factors empowering bank employees. The study is implemented for a recently established private bank with 228 people with 32 questions where 15 questions are focused on empowering employees. The results are analyzed using statistical tests and descriptive methods. The results indicate that leadership, academic qualification, appropriate policy and strategy, cooperation and processes play important role on empowering and enabling bank & apos; s employee.

Abstract:
Spirituality and ethics play important roles in bringing justice for many business units. During the past few years, there has been growing concern on thinking about profitability without considering other aspects such as spirituality. The infamous Enron incident has been a crystal clear of a case of thinking just on short-term profitability without considering other ethical issues. Spirituality helps organizations create ethical values, responsibility and job satisfaction among workers and these issues could increase business competitive advantages. In this paper, we study the impact of spirituality on different levels of individual, workspace and organizational for a real-world case study. The survey results of this paper indicate that spirituality could significantly impact the organization in different levels.

DOI: 10.5267/j.msl.2011.06.009

Keywords: Balanced score card, Banking industry, Data envelopment analysis, Efficiency

Abstract:
One of the primary concerns of many corporate organizations is to assess the weakness and strength of their future partners in an attempt to reduce all potential risks involved with them. In this paper, we present a BSC-DEA based model to indentify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a firm. The proposed model of this paper assumes there are various uncertainties associated with all input/output parameters and uses fuzzy numbers to handle the uncertainties. We also consider a real-world case study of banking industry where four major banks are possible candidates of a partnership and implement the proposed model of this paper for this case study. The results of this study reveal some of the issues such as weakness of electronic banking, services and resource allocation as part of their infrastructure problems.

Abstract:
The new millennium has commenced with an increase awareness of precious value of human resources. Many large firms have increased to use new human resources mobilization policies and the importance of human potential in business has developed, dramatically. There different methods to help human resources increase their potentials such as providing recreational centers, athletic facilities, etc. In this paper, we study the impact of providing exercise facilities on improving the efficiency of employees in management level in the biggest steel producers in Iran called Mobarakeh Steel Complex. In this company, there were about 85 middle level managers and supervisors and the proposed study selects 30 people, randomly and divides them into two equal groups. In the first stage of the study, questionnaire of vocational relation are distributed among the participants of our experiment and we measure some important factors, which could improve vocational relationships. Next, the experimental groups are invited to take part in some selective aerobic programs for 8 weeks and 3 sessions per week and 1 hour and 15 minutes per session, regularly. Finally, we repeat the same experiments after the aerobic programs end and compare the results with the first one. The preliminary results indicate that there is a meaningful difference between the healthcares of these two groups.
