Does institutional quality matter in fostering social progress: A cross national examination Pages 1037-1046 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Nesrin Almatarneh, Okechukwu Lawerence Emeagwali

DOI: 10.5267/j.msl.2019.4.002

Keywords: GDP, Governance, Institutional quality, Social progress, Social development

Abstract:
The first Social Progress Index (SPI) report was released in 2013; a handful of studies examined the determinants of social progress at country level as an instrument in evaluating nation’s prosperity. This study focuses on determining the relationship between institutional quality measured by the World Governance Index (WGI) and social progress measured (SPI).The results are based on the secondary data from 107 countries over a four year period (2014-2017), after controlling Gross Domestic Product per capita, innovativeness and trustworthiness. The result was in favor of the fixed effect model. The findings illustrate that institutional quality was consistently significant in fostering social progress. This study is unique in that, it is the first that examined the role of formal institutional quality in promoting social progress at country level by using SPI as a measurement of social progress.

RETRACTED ARTICLE: Responsiveness of public policy and its impact on education management: An empirical assessment from Indonesia Pages 413-424 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Andriansyah Andriansyah, Taufiqurokhman Taufiqurokhman, Ismail Suardi Wekke

DOI: 10.5267/j.msl.2018.12.008

Keywords: Public Policy, Education Management, Social development, Indonesia

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between public policy and education management in Indonesia by looking at various indicators influencing the public policy and the education management. For education management, factors like education achievement at elementary & higher school, college enrolment, job market in both local and international levels and social development are observed. Public policy is studied through work force development, higher education, brain drain, public safety, constitutional convention, job approval, legislature and operation policies. To examine this association, a survey questionnaire is developed and presented on various respondents regarding public policy and education management. A sample of 327 respondents is empirically examined and it is observed that the effect of work force development on elementary school achievement was significant while the effect of brain drains, job approval and legislature were crucial for the presented indicators of education management. Further studies can be conducted while considering other aspects of both public policy and education.

Mechanisms of communication-control (social cybernetics) based on information technologies and local development Pages 2277-2284 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Miguel Inga-Avila, Roberto Líder Churampi-Cangalaya, Jesús Ulloa-Ninahuamán, José Luis Inga-Avila, Luis Antonio Visurraga Camargo, Enrique Mendoza Caballero, Kiko Richard Lopez Coz

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijdns.2024.6.004

Keywords: Social cybernetics, Complexity, Social development, Information technologies

Abstract:
Social cybernetics, as an interdisciplinary field, has gained increasing interest in the last decade due to the influence of information technologies in society through connectivity, Internet of things, process automation, artificial intelligence among others. This research focuses on exploring the relationship between social cybernetics (communication and control mechanisms) based on information technologies and local development, using structural equation modeling as an analytical tool. The design was non-probabilistic, with a sample of 482 people. The independent variables under study were Use of ICT for communication between local authorities and the population (CAP), Use of ICT for collaboration between public and private institutions (CPPC), Use of ICT for shared decision making (SDM), Use of ICT for local development planning (LDP) and Use of ICT for knowledge management (KM); and the dependent variable was Local Development (LD). It was determined that there is a relationship between all of them except with CAP. The direction and magnitude of the other ratios were: + 0.1390; - 0.3661; + 0.4472 and + 0.8432 respectively. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 93.69% facilitating the prediction of future results. The model has an adequate fit.

Abstract:
Nowadays technology transfer is considered as the process of sharing skills, expertise, knowledge and technologies either among government and institutions or between transferee and transferor enterprises. Using scientific investigations and real-world instances of practice, this study tries to show the importance of technology transfer and its role in societal development. Applying the views of the related literature and using a dynamic system approach and experts & apos; opinions, this study is supposed to determine positive and negative relations among different components of social development and technology transfer which are namely the parts of technological give and takes.
