Authors: Kanitsorn Terdpaopong, Amporn Puapradit, Ussanee Malisuwan

DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2021.5.005

Keywords: Lean, JIT, TPM, VSM, Customisation, Operational performance

Abstract:
Lean practices appear to have aided organisations in improving their operations, especially manufacturing companies. This paper reports on an in-depth study comparing Thai medium-size manufacturing companies who use Lean with those which have not yet adopted Lean. In this paper the word “Lean” is used to refer to “lean practices” as well as “lean strategies”. Lean methods include just-in-time (JIT), total productive maintenance (TPM), automation, value-stream mapping (VSM), Kaizen, material requirement planning (MRP), Kanban, 5S and waste elimination. Primary data were obtained through questionnaires which were analysed using a number of statistical processes including factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM). Some 230 medium-sized manufacturing companies were the focal target of this study. Three latent variables, Lean (exogenous variable), product customisation (endogenous) and operational performance (endogenous) are formed in this study. There were 24 parameters and the findings provide further evidence regarding the effects which Lean practices have on product customisation and operational performance of the companies, for example. The methods for analyzing the data favour the proposed structural equation model. The results show that Lean strategies are linked to improved operational performance in the firms which practice them. Management teams in Thai medium-size manufacturing companies which have resisted Lean are encouraged to adopt Lean in order to improve operational performance, particularly in the present economic climate.

Keywords: Strategic planning, Purchasing, Partnership, Operational performance

Abstract:
The global competition in the manufacturing industry has obliged the companies to adopt an efficient and effective business process and adaptability of the company's competitive strategy following the external uncertainty conditions. The competitive strategy should enhance the competitiveness of the company, which is formulated during the strategic planning process. This paper investigates the impact of strategic planning, purchasing strategy, strategic partnership, on operational performance. The research has surveyed, using a questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale, 135 manufacturing companies domiciled in the region of East Java, Indonesia. Data analysis used the PLS technique. The objective of the analysis is to assess the measurement model for validity and reliability. Besides, the analysis also examines six hypotheses developed. The result reveals that all six hypotheses were empirically supported. The manufacturing company's strategic planning influences the purchasing strategy and strategic partnership. The result also shows that purchasing strategy through periodic evaluation of supplier capability, influences the strategic partnership in terms of involvement of suppliers in the business process of the company. Overall, strategic planning, purchasing strategy, and strategic partnership affect operational performance. It was also found that purchasing strategy and strategic partnerships mediate the influence of strategic planning on the performance. The results presented here may facilitate improvements in operational performance in the context of supply chain management. This paper also contributes to the ongoing research in the supply chain management theory.

Keywords: Information technology, Service supply chain management practices, Operational performance, Capital owner

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to analyze and review the influence of government regulations and information technology on the operational performance of local television stations in East Java with service supply chain management practices as the mediator variable and capital owner’s intervention as the moderator variable. The data of exploratory research was collected through questionnaires distributed to twenty-nine local televisions stations, selected through saturated sampling method from a population of local television stations in East Java, and was analyzed using structural equation modeling. The finding of this study reveals that government regulations and information technology significantly influence the operational performance of local television stations with service supply chain management (SCM) practices as the mediator variable, which means that better government regulations and better information technology are analogous with the importance for the improvement of local television stations operational performance. Capital owner intervention weakens service SCM practices on operating performance and has a direct and immediate effect on reducing the operational performance of local television stations. The practical implications of this study signify the understanding that service SCM practices is an important concept in enhancing the operational performance. Capital owner’s intervention weakens service SCM practices on operating performance of local television stations.

DOI: 10.5267/j.jfs.2024.1.002

Keywords: Green supply chain management, Operational performance, Green purchasing, ISO 14000

Abstract:
This research aims to examine the influence of top management commitment on the operational performance through the mediating role of the green purchasing and ISO 14000 implementation. This study used a quantitative approach and collected data by distributing 70 questionnaires to textile companies located in the Central Java region, Indonesia. One respondent from the top management level, a manager or general manager represented each company. Off the 70, 48 questionnaires were returned and completed correctly. Data analysis used a partial least square (PLS) technique with SmartPLS software version 3.0. The results show that top management commitment has a significant influence on green purchasing, ISO 14000 implementation, and operational performance directly. The results also show that top management commitment also influences the operational performance through the mediating role of the green purchasing and the ISO 14000 implementation. Additional findings indicate that top management commitment contributes more influence on the operational performance through the mediating role of the green purchasing and the ISO1400 implementation than its direct influence. This study contributes to the current theory on supply chain management and paves the way for the practitioner in enhancing the operational performance of the textile industry.

Authors: Mintesnot Abay Miteku, Bahayilu Dessalegn WoldSilase, Endris Ali Dawed

DOI: 10.5267/j.jfs.2022.9.008

Keywords: Logistics drivers, Transportation, Inventory, Facility, Operational performance

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to examine the impact of logistics drivers on the operational performance of large manufacturing industries in Ethiopia. To this end, the researchers employed an explanatory research design with a mixed approach. To select the case industries the researchers used the census sampling technique and stratified sampling technique for respondents’ selection. Both primary and secondary data were accessed about the issue to analyze. After the data collection process, the study used a partial least square structural equation model (PLS-SEM) to find the relationships between the hypothesized constructs. In this study, inferential analysis was made with the support of smart PLS software. The result of the finding depicts that the product of R2 Value specifies that 69.1% of enhancement in an endogenous variable (i.e., Operational performance) is caused by the joint results from the exogenous variable (i.e. Transportation, Inventory, and facility Management). The finding also shows that there are raw materials and currency problems that made the industries produce below their capacity.

A measurement method of routing flexibility in manufacturing systems Pages 593-616 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: F Zammori, M. Braglia, M. Frosolini

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2011.03.001

Keywords: DEA, Flexibility, Manufacturing systems, Operational performance

Abstract:
This paper focuses on routing flexibility, which is the ability to manufacture a part type via several routes and/or to perform different operations on more than one machine. Specifically, the paper presents a comprehensive method for the measurement of routing flexibility, in a generic manufacturing system. The problem is approached in a modular way, starting from a basic set of flexibility indexes. These are progressively extended to include more comprehensive and complex routing attributes, such as: the average efficiency, the range and the homogeneous distribution of the alternative routes. Two procedures are finally proposed to compare manufacturing systems in terms of routing flexibility. The first one uses a vectorial representation of the previously defined indexes and the second one is based on data envelopment analysis, a multi-criteria decision making approach. The paper concludes with a numerical example, supported by discrete event simulation, which validates the proposed approach.
