Board mechanisms and corporate market value: Panel Data Evidence from Jordan)
, Pages: 257-268 Fawzi A. Al Sawalqa ![]() |
||
Abstract: The study examines the effect of board size, frequency of board meetings and frequency of audit committee meetings on the market value of 11 Jordanian commercial banks as measured by Tobin’s Q. Random effect panel data regression is employed to test the study hypotheses. Results reveal that board size has a significant and negative effect on bank market value. Results also show that frequency of board meetings has no effect on bank value, while the frequency of audit committee meetings has a significant and positive effect on bank value. The results suggest that the argument of agency theory and resource independence theory towards the role of board and its committees in supporting firm value should be always combined with the appropriate size. Accordingly, one important implication of the study is that the selection of an appropriate number of board members and the prior effective preparation for their meetings are critical factors to enhance the value of banks in Jordan. Determinants efficiency of Vietnam’s footwear export: A stochastic gravity analysis
, Pages: 311-322 Tu Thuy Anh, Nguyen Thi Ha and Chu Thi Mai Phuong ![]() |
||
Abstract: This study was conducted to estimate the determinants as well as the efficiency of Vietnam’s footwear export to 50 trading partners by applying stochastic fronter gravity approach for the period 2001-2018. We found that Vietnam’s footwear export is positively affected by income measured by gross domestic product (GDP), border and landlock situation. The income elasticity of footwear export of Vietnam was about 1.2%. We also showed that the export efficiency of Vietnam’s footwear was not very high with the average ranges from 50.8% to 63.1%. The 10 most efficient countries were Cambodia, Panama, Slovakia, Belgium, Myanmar, Hongkong, Korea, Chile, the US and the Netherlands. We also found that 10 countries with the largest export potential were the US, China, Germany, Japan, Belgium, the UK, Netherlands, Korea, France, Canada. Regarding the determinants of export efficiency, the study provides evidence that trade freedom, financial freedom and importers’ population density positively contributed to efficiency. Our findings also support further integration of Vietnam since membership to many FTA enhances Vietnam’s footwear export efficiency. These FTAs include AFTA, Vietnam-Chile FTA, ASEAN-India FTA, ASEAN-Korean FTA, ASEAN-Japan FTA, ASEAN-China FTA, ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA. Finally, the study recommends a relevant market policy for Vietnam’s footwear export in the coming years. We have provided 4 types of markets with different levels of priorities that Vietnam’s footwear exporters should focus on. The top footwear market priority should be countries with high potential yet low efficiency such as China, Russia, Brazil, Thailand, Sweden, Singapore and Australia. Abstract: The presence of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia will contribute to the movement of the Indonesian economy, so its growth is an essential part that must be considered by the government. The goal of this study was to explore the role of innovative capabilities in improving the performance of Indonesian SMEs. A variable approach to social capital, entrepreneurial leadership, innovation ability and SME efficiency was used in this research. The research included a sample of 352 small and medium-sized enterprises in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, consisting of 19 medium-sized enterprises and 333 small enterprises out of a total population of 2887 small and medium-sized enterprises (the sampling methodology used was chance sampling and simple random sampling methods). The findings show that social capital does not explicitly have a substantial impact on the business performance of SMEs in Pekanbaru, but if it is mediated by creative capacities, social capital indirectly plays a role in improving the performance of SMEs. Entrepreneurial leadership has a big influence on SMEs. DOI: 10.5267/j.ac.2020.11.021 Keywords: Innovation Capability, SMEs Performance, Social Capital, Entrepreneurial Leadership

Abstract: Investors are facing doubt on the quality of earning reported. They require some indicators to detect the quality of earning reported. The use of past performance as indicators of current and future earning management is challengeable since there are contradicting results in the sign of the relationship between past performance and earning management. Another variable may moderate their relationship. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to know if employee’s relative earning is the moderating variable in the relationship between past performance and earning management. One hundred thirty-five companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange were selected with the use of stratified random sampling. The data is analyzed using sub-group analysis followed by the Chow F test and the linear regression analysis. Earning management is the dependent variable, whereas past performance is the independent variable, and employee relative earning is the moderating variable. The null hypotheses were rejected. A significant negative association exists between past performance and earning management, while the employee relative earning was found to be the moderating variable. The effect of past performance to earning management increases as employee relative earning getting lower. Abstract: Land acquisition and resettlement issues related to hydropower and irrigation works have always been one of the hot issues in Vietnam mountainous areas for many years. Although the Government has introduced many policies to ensure the rights of resettled people, as well as protect their lives, the effectiveness of these policies seems to be still insignificant, because many resettled people still face many difficulties in their daily life, especially income. The research is conducted within the project titled “The urgent issues in resettlement implementation for the ethnic minorities in Vietnam mountainous areas” and funded by National Council for Science and Technology Policy in 2016-2020 (CTDT/16-20) under Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs. Applying Likert-scale and Propensity Score Matching (PSM), this study shows that 34% of the resettled households have a lower income, specifically estimated to be 8.0 - 13.1 million VND/household/year or 1.7 - 3.0 million VND/person/year lower than the income of the controlled group. However, agricultural income is not significantly different between resettled households and controlled households. This article only focuses on clarifying the impact of the resettlement policy on the general income and agricultural income of ethnic minority households; while methods to create jobs, increase income, and reduce poverty sustainably for ethnic minority households in the resettlement sites should be conducted in another research in the future. Investor sentiment by relative strength index and stock return: Empirical evidence on Vietnam's stock market
, Pages: 451-456 Lai Cao Mai Phuong ![]() |

Abstract: This article examines how investor sentiment affects stock returns on Vietnam's stock market. Investor sentiment index is measured by a relative strength index (RSI) of 57 companies listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange from January 1, 2015 to July 31, 2020. Control variables include investors' stock trading behavior, firm size, and cash flow per share. Using Fama-MacBeth regression estimation and general least square estimation (GSL) on a daily basis, both methods find the sentiment of high investors producing higher stock returns, on the contrary, the sentiment of low investors erodes stock returns. Different from the results of Brown and Cliff (2004) [Brown, G. W., & Cliff, M. T. (2004). Investor sentiment and the near-term stock market. Journal of empirical finance, 11(1), 1-27], the article found that the investor sentiment factor plays the most important role in explaining the return of the stock market compared to the rest of the factors. Moderating the role of top management commitment in usage of computer-assisted auditing techniques
, Pages: 457-468 Luay Daoud, Ahmad Marei, Sameer M. Al-Jabaly and Abdullah Ahmed Aldaas ![]() |
||
Abstract: The importance of computer-assisted auditing techniques (CAATs) is widely acknowledged by auditors. However, the current usage of CAATs is not as broad as expected. In this work, the technology–organization–environment framework is used to establish and analyze the organizational factors affecting the post-adoption usage of CAATs. This study also determines whether or not the use of CAATs enhances the audit process. Top management commitment is introduced as a variable that moderates audit firms’ use of CAATs and audit performance. The data used in this work were obtained from auditors of audit firms in Jordan. Analysis results reveal that CAAT usage is affected by the cost–benefit of technology, firm size, readiness and competitive pressure. By contrast, technology compatibility and the complexity of the accounting information systems of clients do not appear to influence CAAT usage. Top management directly influences audit performance and is thus crucial in dictating how auditors utilize CAATs. However, it does not exert a moderating effect (top management × audit firm’s use of CAATs) between audit firms’ use of CAATs and audit performance. Moreover, the use of CAATs improves the overall audit process of audit firms. Abstract: This study aims to determine client’s attitude explanatory factors for the selection of an Islamic bank at Jordan. Mainly, the study identifies factors shaping client’s attitude toward Islamic banks that are considered in clients' decision choices related to different behavioral theories. Data were randomly collected from Islamic banks clients in Jordan. A questionnaire was developed, distributed, and analyzed via the model of t-test on 138 clients. The results show that clients consider several factors in their choices between religious and non-religious. Essentially, religious factors are principles, absence of interest, religious edict or justification, profit-sharing, and Islamic price basis of banking services. The non-religious related factors were sufficient branches, caring and comfortable, appearance and internal decoration design, fast services, response to their clients’ needs, sufficient number of staff, giving clients the top priorities, clients' needs to include disclosing information as a part of accounting system adequacy. Adequate attention is needed to every client, competitive service prices, and the influence of friends and family. The study concludes that it is not possible to say that religious factors are enough, but the interest-free banking greatly represents the non-religious or the economic factors, and the profit-sharing principle is important; Policymakers must consider this to buildup a positive attitude toward Islamic banks. The findings recommend that religious and non-religious values significantly influence clients’ intentions and choices. It suggests that religious ethics is the most important factor, and the availability of information systems disclosing clients' needs. Abstract: This paper endeavors to investigate whether the Islamic financial system can tackle the issue of financial exclusion in India or not. The present study has made an earnest attempt to explore the discriminating factors behind choosing of the institutes (conventional or Islamic), in decreasing order of their importance. Data for the study are collected from 635 respondents, who are customers of Islamic and traditional financial institutes. The area selected for the survey is the state of Kerala, which is considered as the Islamic finance hub in India. The data collected are analyzed by employing the discriminant analysis along with drawing inferences from descriptive statistics. The study finds various factors in descending order of their importance. The factors are type of employment, religion (Muslim/Non-Muslim), income and gender. These are discriminating factors for choosing particular institutes (conventional or Islamic). The study shows that Islamic finance system was chosen by those, particularly Muslims, who did not have good employment and sufficient income. Hence, it is recommended that extensive formal beginning of Islamic finance in India, will lead to higher financial inclusion, since generally the financially excluded individuals belong to the said segments of the society, furthermore, Islamic finance is highly fascinated by the mentioned groups, the planners should think accordingly. The study is novel in its’ approach as it evidently illustrates that Islamic financial system is chosen by those, who do not have good employment, Muslims and those who earn less. Thus, there should be extensive formal commencement of Islamic finance in India to kick off higher financial inclusion.
