Optimization of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) factors: Case study of a vegetable oil manufacturing company Pages 124-135 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Faria Aktar Tonny, Ayesha Maliha, Mahedi Islam Chayan, Md Doulotuzzaman Xames

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2022.12.002

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Overall equipment effectiveness, Total productive maintenance, Productivity, Optimization, Response surface methodology, Case study

Abstract:
The poor maintenance and usage of the equipment and machines of a vegetable oil manufacturing company adversely affect its competitive advantage. These industries are faced with numerous equipment maintenance challenges in the path to increasing their throughput as well as profitability. To address the said maintenance challenges, process data were obtained for the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) factors after their Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) implementation in the company. Minitab 21 software was used to analyze the data collected, and the results showed that the mean for quality, availability, and performance obtained were 96.929%, 63.35%, and 61.20%, respectively. This shows that the quality of products is the greatest OEE factor that vegetable oil manufacturing companies must consider meticulously to reduce the six big losses in their production processes. Response Surface Method (RSM) with Central Composite design, with the application of Design Expert 13 software, was used to model, analyze, and optimize the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) using availability, quality, and performance as the input parameters. The analysis of both the actual and coded values, which is the main contribution of the study, showed that quality has the greatest value followed by availability and performance. It was found that, to effectively reduce the six big losses, the quality, performance, and availability should be targeted as 98.3052%, 81.6022%, and 80.103%, respectively.

An integrated continuous improvement model of TPM, TPS and TQM for boosting profitability of manufacturing industries: An innovative model & guideline Pages 33-50 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Haftu Hailu, Solomon Mengstu, Tewedros Hailu

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2017.11.002

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Continuous Improvement, Total Productive Maintenance, Toyota Production System, Total Quality Management, PDCA

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to develop an integrated literature based TPM, TPS and TQM mod-el through PDCA cycle, and implementation guideline for the implementation of the model. At this time very few studies are available on this research area, even this research on integrated model of TPM, TPS and TQM practices, and implementation guideline are not corresponding. The method-ology to develop the model and the implementation guideline is based on identifying the uniqueness and common practices of TPM, TPS and TQM systems, existing practice of the integration and implementation guideline, identifying the existing gaps on the model and implementation guideline, developing new integrated TPM, TPS and TQM practice model, and implementation guideline. Previous very few studies of uniqueness, common practices and implementation guideline of the three systems are preserved. The findings of this research, an integrated cutting-edge model of TPM, TPS and TQM practices and implementation guidelines are developed. The originality / value of the developed model and implementation guideline enable manufacturing industries continuously to be competitive and profitable.

Implementation of 5S practices: A review Pages 155-162 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Jagtar Singh, Vikas Rastogi, Richa Sharma

doi 10.5267/j.uscm.2014.5.002

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: 5S, Availability, Efficiency, Housekeeping, Total Productive Maintenance, Total Quality Management

Abstract:
5S is a systematic technique used by organizations come from five Japanese words; Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu(standardize) and Shitsuke (sustain). This system helps to organize a workplace for efficiency and decrease non value added activities and optimize quality and productivity through monitoring an organized environment. This paper aims to review previous studies about benefits of 5S Implementation and its efficiency in organizations. The results show that 5S is an effective tool for improvement of organizational performance, regardless of organization type, size, its production or its service. Consequently, 5S technique would strongly support the objectives of organization to achieve continuous improvement in performance and productivity.
