Thermal and morphological studies of chitosan and agar-agar blends Pages 375-382 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: M. S S Jayaprakash, Shashidhar Shashidhar, Arunkumar Lagashetty, Sangappa K Ganiger, T. K. Vishnuvardhan

doi 10.5267/j.ccl.2022.12.002 Crossmark

Keywords: Chitosan, Agar-agar, Blends, Compositions, Glass transition, SEM, TGA

Abstract:
Many researchers are attracted to Chitosan based blends due to its properties and potential applications in various fields. The advanced development of Chitosan blends integrates the science and technology of blended materials. The present experimentation is reporting the preparation of Chitosan and Agar-Agar blends (CCA) by chemical mixing of these materials at different compositions. The thermal studies of the prepared blends were studied by differential scanning colorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tools. Thermal studies reveal that the lowest degradation temperatures of blends might be attributed to the partial miscibility of CAA blends at particular composition and miscibility due to single glass transition temperature (Tg) between Chitosan and Agar-agar. Bonding nature of sample blends were carried out by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) instrumentation. This study reveals the interaction between Chitosan and Agar-agar is partial miscibility. Morphological study reveals that a few aggregated particles, which suggest the partial miscibility of CAA blends. Homogeneity of blend compositions and specific intermolecular interactions of hydrogen bonding type is also observed.

Thermo-physico-chemical and statistical mechanical properties of Washingtonian filifera new lignocellulosic fiber Pages 137-150 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Djamel Edinne Gaagaia, Mustapha Bouakba, Abdelheq Layachi

doi 10.5267/j.esm.2019.3.002 Crossmark

Keywords: WF fibers, Mechanical properties, FTIR, XRD, TGA, Statistical methods

Abstract:
In this work, novel cellulosic fibers are extracted from Washingtonia Filifera (WF) plant using an environment friendly technique. Morphological, physico-chemical, thermal and mechanical properties are reported in this paper. Micro graphical SEM shows the presence of cells in the fiber. FTIR and XRD experimental analyzes show a cristinality index of 48.88%, and the WF fibers are found to be thermally stable until 201°C by using TGA and DTG thermo graphic analyzes with an appropriate activation energy of 72.46 kJ/mol, where Young modulus and tensile strength of strain were determined using tensile tests of single fiber at 2.17 GPa, 134 MPa and 26.55%, respectively. Mechanical properties are analyzed using a statistical method.

FTIR and thermal studies on esters grafted HDPE Pages 135-144 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Vellaichamy Parthasarathy, Viswalingam Dhanalakshm, Ramasamy Anbarasan

Keywords: Functionalization, Crosslinking, DSC, FTIR, Grafting, HDPE, TGA

Abstract:
HDPE was functionalized with two different esters in an inert atmosphere at 160°C, under different experimental conditions by thermolysis method. The order of the functionalization and crosslinking reactions was determined. The C=C formation peak is assigned at 1610 cm-1.The percentage of functionalization was determined by FTIR spectroscopy method. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetric methods were also used to study about the thermal properties of the functionalized HDPE.
