A system dynamics approach for analyzing supply chain industry: Evidence from rice industry Pages 217-226 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Maun Jamaludin, Teddy Hikmat Fauzi, Deden Novan Setiawan Nugraha

doi 10.5267/j.uscm.2020.7.007

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Supply chain, Rice Industry, System Dynamics, Policy Strategy

Abstract:
The rice industry policy must be comprehensive with a scope of policy from upstream to downstream. In other words, it must cover all supply chains of the rice industry consisting of five levels, such as, the level of farmers who process rice, grain traders, rice traders, rice traders in production areas and rice traders in urban markets. The purposes of this research are (1) to identify and model the current supply chain system of the rice industry; (2) analyze the simulation of the rice industry supply chain system policy; and (3) recommend rice industry policies which provide incentives for all rice industry supply chain actors. The research method used is the case study method. The aim is to understand a phenomenon in the rice industry supply chain system in depth in West Java Province โ€“ Indonesia. The results show that the rice industry supply chain system model is a closed cycle consisting of material flow feedback in the form of grain, rice, money and information flow in the form of demand that occurs in the interaction of actors from farmers, grain traders, rice milling units (RMU), rice traders in production centers to rice traders in urban wholesale markets in Bandung and Jakarta. Every businessman in the rice industry has the same goal, which is to maximize the profits. Thus, it can potentially lead to a conflict of interest which is manifested in the desire of every businessman to sell as much as they produce at the highest possible price but this will not happen because of the limited resources they have, such as capital and the market demand they receive. The strategy of increasing production is often carried out by the government at this time which it cannot be done partially without considering other rice industry supply chain instruments. The impacts of this partial policies are farmers, collectors, rice traders and rice mills gain unstable profits and the benefits received are lower than before the production strategy and policy were implemented. The recommended policy strategy is the rice industry supply chain system should be able to guarantee the availability of sufficient rice and capable of guaranting the welfare of farmers with a policy that integrates rice farming and agro-industry production strategies, financing strategies and accessible to all levels of actors in the rice industry supply chain, human resource development strategies and rice business risk management strategies, simultaneously. The integrated policy strategy needs to be carried out since rice supply chain management is a coordinating system of material flow in the form of grain, rice, money, facilities and information flow in the form of orders or requests, knowledge and innovation.

Flow shop scheduling algorithm to optimize warehouse activities Pages 49-66 PDF Download PDF

Authors: P. Centobelli, G. Converso, T. Murino, L.C. Santillo

doi 10.5267/j.ijiec.2015.8.001

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: flow-shop scheduling, Supply Chain, System Dynamics, Wholesaler

Abstract:
Successful flow-shop scheduling outlines a more rapid and efficient process of order fulfilment in warehouse activities. Indeed the way and the speed of order processing and, in particular, the operations concerning materials handling between the upper stocking area and a lower forward picking one must be optimized. The two activities, drops and pickings, have considerable impact on important performance parameters for Supply Chain wholesaler companies. In this paper, a new flow shop scheduling algorithm is formulated in order to process a greater number of orders by replacing the FIFO logic for the drops activities of a wholesaler company on a daily basis. The System Dynamics modelling and simulation have been used to simulate the actual scenario and the output solutions. Finally, a t-Student test validates the modelled algorithm, granting that it can be used for all wholesalers based on drop and picking activities.

Authors: Mahtab Hajghasem, Payam Makvandi, Seyed Shahrooz Seyedi Hosseininia

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2013.12.017

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Production mix, System dynamics, VENSIM

Abstract:
This paper presents an implementation of system dynamics model to determine appropriate product mix by considering various factors such as labor, materials, overhead, etc. for an Iranian producer of cosmetic and sanitary products. The proposed model of this paper considers three hypotheses including the relationship between product mix and profitability, optimum production capacity and having minimum amount of storage to take advantage of low cost production. The implementation of system dynamics on VENSIM software package has confirmed all three hypotheses of the survey and suggested that in order to reach better mix product, it is necessary to reach optimum production planning, take advantage of all available production capacities and use inventory management techniques.

Authors: M. Mutingi, C. Mbohwa

doi 10.5267/j.ijiec.2012.05.004

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Fuzzy set theory, Policy optimization, Human resources, Manpower systems, System dynamics

Abstract:
The dynamics of human resource recruitment and training in an uncertain environment creates a challenge for many policy makers in various organisations. In the presence of fuzzy manpower demand and training capacity, many companies fear losing critical human resources when their employees leave. As such, the development of effective dynamic policies for recruitment and training in a fuzzy dynamic environment is imperative. In this frame of mind, a fuzzy systems dynamics modelling approach is proposed to enable the policy maker to develop reliable dynamic policies relating recruitment, training, and available skills, from a systems perspective. It is anticipated in this study that fuzzy system dynamics and optimization approach would help organizations to design effective manpower policies and strategies.

Qualitative design and quantitative analysis of sustainable business models using value triangular business model canvas and system dynamics Pages 243-266 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Farshad Alamdar Youli, Ali Mohammadi, Moslem Alimohammadlou, Abbas Abbasi

doi 10.5267/j.jfs.2023.3.002

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Sustainable business models, System dynamics, Value triangular business model canvas, Balanced values

Abstract:
To date, the use of three key aspects together has received little attention in studies on sustainable business models (SBMs). These aspects are a) the qualitative design of SBMs based on a valid sustainable business model canvas presented so far, b) the dynamic quantitative analysis of the designed SBMs, and c) the identification of appropriate business policies for different future scenarios, not just for one. Therefore, in this research, an attempt is made to study all three aspects by proposing a new practical framework based on one of the latest SBMs, called value triangular business model canvas (VTBMC), and system dynamics. To evaluate the proposed framework in the real world, it was implemented as a case study in Farassan Industrial and Manufacturing Company, one of the companies producing composite pipes. The results showed that the proposed framework helps business owners and managers identify the proper policies to achieve their key business objectives in the future under critical uncertainties and also create appropriate balanced values for a wide range of stakeholders, rather than just for shareholders.

System dynamics of manpower planning strategies under various demand scenarios Pages 2689-2698 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Michael Mutingi

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2012.09.027

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Human resource, Manpower system, Strategy evaluation simulation, System dynamics

Abstract:
The development of human resources recruitment and training strategies in a dynamic environment poses a challenge to many policy makers in various organisations. The goal of every human resource manager is to recruit, train and deploy the right personnel at the right place and at the right time in order to meet organizational requirements. We develop a system dynamics simulation model that captures the dynamic behaviour of a typical corporate manpower system. Three major strategies are indentified and simulated under different manpower demand scenarios. Based on a set of performance indices, the impact of the strategies is simulated under assumed demand scenarios including steady increasing, fluctuating, and s-shaped demand. Useful managerial insights are derived from the study. The model is a decision support tool for developing reliable dynamic manpower policies in terms of recruitment, training capacity, available skills, and attrition. This approach can assist organizations to design effective manpower strategies.

Dynamic simulation for effective workforce management in new product development Pages 2571-2580 PDF Download PDF

Authors: M. Mutingi

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2012.07.006

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: System dynamics, Knowledge management, New product development, Workforce

Abstract:
Effective planning and management of workforce for new product development (NPD) projects is a great challenge to many organisations, especially in the presence of engineering changes during the product development process. The management objective in effective workforce management is to recruit, develop and deploy the right people at the right place at the right time so as to fulfill organizational objectives. In this paper, we propose a dynamic simulation model to address the workforce management problem in a typical NPD project consisting of design, prototyping, and production phases. We assume that workforce demand is a function of project work remaining and the current available skill pool. System dynamics simulation concepts are used to capture the causality relationships and feedback loops in the workforce system from a systems thinking. The evaluation of system dynamics simulation reveals the dynamic behaviour in NPD workforce management systems and shows how adaptive dynamic recruitment and training decisions can effectively balance the workforce system during the NPD process.

Abstract:
Management of energy plays an important role on having sustainable growth on the economy of developing countries. Electricity is part of the main infrastructure of any country, it can help develop many industries, and any shortage in electricity can jeopardize many heavy industries. In Iran, for many years electricity used to be subsided by the government hoping that economy grows faster but this caused a major problem for this industry since the electricity industry could not handle its expenses and faced with somewhat irreversible crises. In this paper, we present a system dynamic investigation to study the existing crises in this sector. The preliminary result of the implementation of system dynamic is that the sector needs to increase its productivity, significantly and lowers the cost of product.

Understanding the dynamics of the adoption of renewable energy technologies: A system dynamics approach Pages 109-118 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Michael Mutingi

doi 10.5267/j.dsl.2013.01.002

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Renewable energy technology, System dynamics, Technology adoption, Technology management

Abstract:
Renewable energy technologies (RET) have faced a number of constraints that have affected their rate of adoption. This can be attributed to the presence of complex dynamic factors associated with the technology adoption process. This paper simulates the dynamic behaviour of the RET adoption process, from a systems dynamics point of view. Complex dynamic interactions between technology adopters, policy makers and policies are captured based on systems thinking concepts. Based on a set of input policy parameters and variables, the behaviour of RET adoption is investigated and analyzed. Sensitivity experiments and further โ€œwhat-ifโ€ experiments are carried out to obtain in-depth understanding of RET adoption process. Useful managerial insights are drawn from the simulation results, relevant to decision makers concerned with renewable energy technology innovations and their adoption.
