Proactive personality, value congruence, perceived organizational support, and problem prevention behavior: A reciprocal moderated mediation model Pages 4045-4054 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Khai T. Nguyen, Phuong N.D. Nguyen, Truc T.T. Do, Anh T. Trinh, Vu A.N. Truong

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2020.7.004

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Proactive personality, Person-organization value congruence, Person-supervisor value congruence, Perceived organizational support, Problem prevention behavior

Abstract:
Based on arguments of the social exchange theory (SET) and person-organization fit (P-O Fit), the environment can affect personality expression through behaviors and human perception of the environment. This research develops and tests two key assumptions: (1) individuals with proactive personality (PP) show proactive behavior (PB), particularly problem prevention behavior (PrP), through person-organization value congruence (POV), and person-supervisor value congruence (PSV); (2) the strength of the process of demonstrating problem prevention behavior depends on the perceived organizational support (POS) of the staff. Survey results from 715 employees and supervisors at hospitals in Vietnam show that (1) POV and PSV have an intermediary role between PP and PrP, (2) Intermediate effects of POV and PSV in the relationship between PP and PrP are moderated by POS. Specifically, the intermediate effect of POV, PSV is stronger for employees with high POS and lower for employees with lower POS. These findings provide a new perspective on understanding mechanisms to enhance employeeโ€™s PrP. As a result, the theoretical, practical implications and limitations of the study are also discussed.

Impact of strategic leadership on organizational performance, strategic orientation and operational strategy Pages 1331-1344 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Elif BilginoฤŸlu, Ugur Yozgat

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2018.9.007

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Job stress, Perceived organizational support, Emotional intelligence, Job performance

Abstract:
This paper examined the relationship between job stress and job performance, along with the moderating effect of emotional intelligence (EI) and perceived organizational support (POS) among employees in the Istanbul financial sector. 564 employees and their 78 immediate supervisors were surveyed. The findings of this study suggest that job stress was negatively associated with job per-formance, where EI and POS were able to reduce the effect of stress on job performance. The re-sults largely support the significant impact of job stress on job performance, moderated through EI and POS as hypostasized. This paper demonstrates the important role of the job stress on job per-formance which contributes to conceptual understanding of organizational efficiency. The study has used self-reports- as well as supervisor reports to study the effects of job stress on organizational performance.

Activity systems modeling as a theoretical lens for social exchange studies Pages 47-60 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Ernest Jones

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2015.11.007

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Activity systems modeling, Activity theory, Leader-member exchange, Perceived organizational support, Social exchange theory

Abstract:
The social exchange perspective seeks to acknowledge, understand and predict the dynamics of social interactions. Empirical research involving social exchange constructs have grown to be highly technical including confirmatory factor analysis to assess construct distinctiveness and structural equation modeling to assess construct causality. Each study seemingly strives to assess how underlying social exchange theoretic constructs interrelate. Yet despite this methodological depth and resultant explanatory and predictive power, a significant number of studies report findings that, once synthesized, suggest an underlying persistent threat of conceptual or construct validity brought about by a search for epistemological parsimony. Further, it is argued that a methodological approach that embraces inherent complexity such as activity systems modeling facilitates the search for simplified models while not ignoring contextual factors.
