Abstract:
In the present experimental study, two dissimilar sister aluminum alloys, 5083 and 5086, are welded through friction stir welding process. Different experiments are conducted on vertical milling machine through a fixture design and firm holding welding plates on it. These experiments are performed by varying welding parameters including welding speed, rpm, different pin profiles, tool tilt angle at five levels each. Two different mechanical properties of the welded specimen (i.e. tensile strength and percentage of elongation) have been tested and compared with the base metals to find out the joint efficiency. Also it is observed that rpm, tool tilt angle and different pin profiles make significant impacts on friction stir welded joints. Tool rpm increases the tensile strength to an extent. Also, tool pin profile affects the stirring or plastic flow of material under tool shoulder. It is shown through visual and optical analysis that surface finish and weld quality of joints depend on tool tilt angle.

Abstract:
The present study focused on the Taguchi experimental design technique of Friction Stir Welds of dissimilar aluminum alloys (AA2024-T6 and AA6351-T6) for tensile properties. Effect of process parameters, rotational speed, Traverse speed and axial force, on tensile strength was evaluated. Optimized welding conditions for maximize tensile strength were estimated in order to improve the productivity, weld quality. Non-linear regression mathematical model was developed to correlate the process parameters to tensile strength. The results were verified by conducting the confirmation tests at identified optimum conditions.

Abstract:
In this paper, butt joining of Al5083 to commercially pure copper is investigated by friction stir welding method. The effects of transverse welding speed of the tool on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the joint were studied, experimentally. By examining different circumstances, changes in the joint strength were studied and optimized in term of transverse speed. Based on the obtained results, welding speed can improve or reduce the joint strength and an optimum value can be found for the welding speed. Welded Joint that was conducted at the rotation speed of 800 RPM and tool traverse speed of 60 mm min?1 had the highest tensile strength (i.e. about 98% of the weak base metal). Intermetallic compounds were formed in the stir zone and XRD results indicated that Al4Cu9 and Al2Cu were the intermetallic compounds in the stir zone. Micro-cracks formed around the intimatelic particles were observed in the section of joint.
