Enhancing the capacity of tax authorities and its impact on transfer pricing activities of FDI en-terprises in Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh, Dong Nai, and Binh Duong province of Vietnam Pages 1299-1310 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Hong Nhat Nguyen, Jacquline Tham, Ali Khatibi, S. M. Ferdous Azam

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2019.4.011

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Vietnam, Tax Authority Capacity, FDI, Transfer pricing

Abstract:
This study aims at discovering the relationship between the improvement in the capacity of tax authorities and its effect on the transfer pricing activities of foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises in four provinces/cities of Vietnam: Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh, Dong Nai, and Binh Duong province. These are the first localities in Vietnam to establish the Division of Transfer Pricing Inspectorate in local Tax Department, under the direction of General Department of Taxation of Vietnam. The paper then proposes a further study on how the tax authorities of Vietnam should improve their capacities to make FDI enterprises more compliant with the transfer pricing regulations in Vietnam. The authors deploy the method of quantitative research through collecting self-administered closed format questionnaires from people in charge of finance/accounting/transfer pricing of FDI enterprises operating in Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh, Dong Nai, and Binh Duong province of Vietnam. The findings suggest that there was a strong probability that the capacity of tax authorities would impact on the transfer pricing activities of FDI enterprises in Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh, Dong Nai, and Binh Duong of Vietnam. Vietnamese Government should enhance the capacity of the tax authorities; establish Transfer Pricing Inspectorate Division in all local Tax Departments of Vietnam. The authors believe that the improvement of tax officialsโ€™ capacity especially those in charge of transfer pricing auditing will prevent the FDI enterprises from transfer pricing manipulation, hence these enterprises will be more compliant to transfer pricing regulations of Vietnam. The most significant value of the study is to support Vietnamese policymakers, especially those in the field of Finance (Ministry of Finance, General Department of Taxation) to improve their capacity when carrying out transfer pricing audit in FDI enterprises. The more transparent and aggressive the tax officials are, the better these enterprises follow the regulations.

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2018.4.034

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Vietnamese accounting, International accounting, Financial statements, FDI

This research is conducted for evaluating the impact levels of determinants affecting the differences of financial statements of FDI firms under Vietnamese Accounting (VA) and International Ac-counting (IAS/IFRS). Data were collected by conducting survey of FDI firms and audit firms for the period from 2015 to 2017. Based on the quantitative data, multiple regression was employed for showing the influence levels of determinants on the variable of differences of financial reports. The results show that seven determinants had positive relationships with the differences of financial statements prepared by FDI under Vietnamese accounting and IAS/IFRS. Based on the findings, some recommendations are given for reducing fee of conversion of financial statements from Vietnamese accounting to international accounting, increasing the comparability of financial statements and improving information quality of financial statements.

doi 10.5267/j.ac.2020.7.011

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Political factors, FDI, Transparency, Business Policies, Political characteristics

Abstract:
Attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to contribute to Vietnam's limited development resources is an objective and indispensable activity. In fact, the investment attraction activities have gained many important achievements in stimulating economic development, curbing inflation and creating jobs. Nevertheless, in many prior studies, there were less discussion on the important role of political factors in the relationship with FDI attraction in Vietnam. Therefore, this study aims to explore that relationship through three variables such as the transparency, the similarity in political characters, and business policies. The findings show the significant effects of those studied factors on the FDI attraction within Vietnam context.

Determinants of foreign direct investment in ASEAN: A panel approach Pages 213-222 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Hong Hiep Hoang, Duc Hung Bui

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2014.12.015

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: ASEAN, Determinants, FDI, FGLS, panel

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the factors of FDI inflows in ASEAN countries over the period 1991 to 2009. The results indicate that the market size, trade openness, quality infrastructure, human capital, labor productivity are the main factors that have positive impacts on FDI inflows. Additionally, exchange rate policy, real interest rate, political risk and corruption also affect FDI inflows. Surprisingly, the cheap labor does not help to attract FDI to the region, because foreign investors are particularly interested in labor productivity. This study also shows that the Asian financial crisis in 1997 affected the amount of FDI inflows, but not on the nature of FDI inflows in the region.

Political risk and foreign direct investment in Nigeria: New empirical evidence Pages 171-180 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Musa Hatim Koko, Yatiban Aminurraasyid, Zengeni Knocks Tapiwa

doi 10.5267/j.ac.2016.11.001

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Political Risk, FDI, Nigeria

Abstract:
The positive effect of globalization has continued to impact FDI inflow to developing countries during the last decade except for the rising influence of political risk in host locations. Mixed outcomes have trailed the findings related to the studies on FDI and political risk relationship and in particular on African countries like Nigeria. This paper investigated the effect of political risk on FDI inflow to Nigeria using secondary data from 2000 to 2014 using simple linear regression. The study combined from select variables, the institutional factors with location determinants peculiar to Nigeriaโ€™s risk environment. It is found that political risk holds a positive and significant association with FDI to Nigeria but not close enough to inhibit the inflow of foreign investment to the country. However, the findings provide a strong basis for policy shift in relation to security, country promotion and rebranding as well strengthening of institutions.
