The effect of financial distress on earnings management and unpredicted net earnings in companies listed on Tehran Stock Exchange Pages 933-938 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Samin Ranjbar, Gholamreza Farsad Amanollahi

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2018.6.015

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Financial distress, Tehran Stock Exchange, Earning management

Abstract:
Many financial crisis are related to public corporations, which are increasing. Many investors and creditors are having trouble predicting a financial crisis, especially when managing profits. Recent studies identify the factors associated with earnings management to determine the relationship between the factors and manipulated profits. In order to reduce the risk of financial crises and to help investors avoid large losses in the stock market, it is necessary to develop a model for predicting profit management. In addition, for traditional auditing technologies, it is also difficult to limit the time, human resources, costs, and the impact of abnormal behaviors on complex and large financial information. Therefore, developing a prediction model for managing profits for auditors is useful in identifying the degree of manipulation in financial statements. This paper examines the effect of corporate financial distress on unpredicted net earnings and corporate profits on accepted companies in Tehran Stock Exchange over the period 2010-2015. The models used to test the hypotheses of the research are linear regression using panel data. The results show that the coefficients of the financial distress, institutional ownership, annual sales growth, company loss, company size, the company's market share and firm fixed costs are statistically meaningful. In other words, these independent variables influence on unforeseeable profit and earnings management.

Authors: Tulus Suryanto, Agrianti Komalasari

doi 10.5267/j.uscm.2018.10.008

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Financial reporting standard, Supply chain management, Value relevance, Earning management, Timely loss recognition, IFRS

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the role of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in supply chain management. To achieve this purpose, quantitative research approach was used, and the study preferred cross-sectional research design rather than longitudinal research design. Based on literature, six hypotheses were proposed concerning the relationship between international financial reporting and supply chain management. Data were collected from the employees of the dairy companies in Indonesia through area cluster sampling technique. Only those employees were selected having direct relationship with supply chain and accounting activities. Structural equation modelling was sued to test the hypotheses. The results of the study reveal that international financial reporting had significant association with supply chain management. The elements of supply chain accounting quality, namely; value relevance, earnings management and timely loss recognition had significant positive relationship with supply chain management. A better implementation of international financial reporting is the key to enhance the supply chain management.

Past performance and earning management: The moderating effect of employee relative earning Pages 349-356 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Ronny Kountur, Bramantyo Djohanputro, Martdian Ratna Sari

doi 10.5267/j.ac.2020.11.018

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Earning Management, Past Performance, Employee Relative Earning

Abstract:
Investors are facing doubt on the quality of earning reported. They require some indicators to detect the quality of earning reported. The use of past performance as indicators of current and future earning management is challengeable since there are contradicting results in the sign of the relationship between past performance and earning management. Another variable may moderate their relationship. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to know if employeeโ€™s relative earning is the moderating variable in the relationship between past performance and earning management. One hundred thirty-five companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange were selected with the use of stratified random sampling. The data is analyzed using sub-group analysis followed by the Chow F test and the linear regression analysis. Earning management is the dependent variable, whereas past performance is the independent variable, and employee relative earning is the moderating variable. The null hypotheses were rejected. A significant negative association exists between past performance and earning management, while the employee relative earning was found to be the moderating variable. The effect of past performance to earning management increases as employee relative earning getting lower.

The impact of corporate governance mechanisms and IFRS on earning management in Saudi Arabia Pages 207-224 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Abdulwahid A. Hashed, Faozi A. Almaqtari

doi 10.5267/j.ac.2020.9.015

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Corporate governance mechanisms, IFRS adoption, Compliance with IFRS, Earning management, Financial reporting quality, Saudi GAAP

Abstract:
The current research seeks to assess the influence of corporate governance mechanisms and IFRS adoption on compliance with IFRS, earning management, and financial reporting quality(FRQ). A sample comprises 102 Saudi listed firms for the period spanning from 2014 up to 2019 was used. The study used descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multivariate analysis to estimate the results. The results reveal that while board size, board meeting and foreign ownership had negative effects on compliance with IFRS, board and audit committee independence exhibited a positive effect. Further, the results demonstrate that there was a sign of earning management under IFRS when a performance magnitude was used. The results also indicate that board and audit committee size, audit committee meeting and managerial ownership had significant negative effects on financial reporting quality however, board and audit committee independence showed a significant positive effect. Importantly, the results found that FRQ under IFRS was better than Saudi GAAP. The present research provides practical implications for policy makers, stock market authority, and academicians. More regulatory and disclosure requirements have to be imposed and financial reporting supervisory board need to be formed. The present research provides a novel contribution to IFRS compliance, earning management, financial reporting quality and corporate governance literature. It has a unique contribution as it attempts to investigate this issue in the context of an emerging economy and a recent IFRS adopter; Saudi Arabia that has special country-specific characteristics. The study also provides an evidence by investigating earning management and financial reporting quality under both sets of accounting standards; IFRS and Saudi GAAP.

doi 10.5267/j.ac.2020.9.011

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: IFRS, Conservatism, Earning Management, Quality of Accounting Performance, Cost of Capital, Efficiency of Investment decision

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to verify the impact of international financial reporting standards (IFRS) adoption on the quality of accounting performance and efficiency of investment decisions in the Saudi business environment as an emerging economy. In this study, content analysis approach is adopted for examining the annual reports of Saudi companies listed in Saudi stock exchange market during two periods: the pre-adoption of IFRS period during the year of 2016 and the post-adoption of IFRS period during the period 2017-2018. The study uses accounting information, accounting conservatism, earning management as alternative variables of accounting performance quality. In addition to accounting profit quality, liquidity and cost of capital are also used as alternative variables for the efficiency of investment decisions. The study finds that there was a positive impact of IFRS adoption on the quality of accounting performance, since it was positively related to both the qualitative characteristics of information and accounting conservatism, while it was negatively related to earning management. IFRS also improves the efficiency of investment decisions, as it was positively related to both profit quality and liquidity while it was negatively related to cost of capital.

A study on effect of information asymmetry on earning management: Evidence from Tehran Stock Exchange Pages 2161-2166 PDF Download PDF

Authors: Fatemeh Dadbeh, Narjes Mogharebi

doi 10.5267/j.msl.2013.06.001

๐Ÿ”‘ Keywords: Earning management, Information asymmetry, Tehran Stock Exchange

Abstract:
Information asymmetry is a situation in which one party in a transaction has more or superior information compared with another. This often happens in transactions where the seller knows more than the buyer does although the reverse also may happen. Potentially, this could be a harmful circumstance because one party can take advantage of the other party & apos; s lack of knowledge. In this paper, we examine the effect of information asymmetry on earning management. To test the research hypotheses, a sample of 47 companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange over the period 2002-2008 based on panel data was taken. In these models, the presence or absence of effects models (fixed or random) is reviewed and finally the best model is estimated. Inference is based on significant level or p-value, thus likely that any value or significance level of the test is less than 0.05 is rejected at the 95 percent confidence level. The result shows that the information asymmetry has some meaningful effects on earnings management.

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between earnings management and information asymmetry based on some companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange over the period of 2005-2010. The study only uses qualified samples by taking into account all limitations and necessary criteria. Based on the results of this survey, we can conclude that there is not a significant relationship between earning management and information asymmetry in Tehran Stock Exchange. There is also not a significant relationship between low or high earning management and information asymmetry. Estimated dividend announcement has information content and it can influence on information asymmetry. Finally, in Tehran Stock Exchange, there is information asymmetry and after dividend announcement, its value is more than before.
