Keywords: Composites, Fiber orientation, Orientation tensor, Image processing

Abstract:
The study and determining of fibre-orientation with a two-dimensional (2D) image analysis of cross-sections is a fast and efficient way to get the fibre orientation distribution over a wide specimen area. There are several techniques for measuring fiber-orientation; however, the present study is based on a technique for the sake of obtaining better results . In this work , we utilize second moments technique to determine fibre orientation state by the use of a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images. In order to determine the fiber-orientation state, a second order orientation tensor is employed. A thermoplastic matrix containing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% by weight of hemp fiber is molded using an injection molding machine to obtain dumbbell samples. The orientation tensor is determined by employing geometric parameters of fibers on cross-sections.The geometric parameters are calculated by using image analysis, which employs a computational code especially developed to obtain a tensor components.

Experimental investigation and numerical prediction for the fatigue life durability of austenitic stainless steel at room temperature Pages 121-130 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: M. A. Khairul, S. M. Sapuan Faris, M. AL-Oqla, E. S. Zainudin

DOI: 10.5267/j.esm.2019.4.001

Keywords: Fatigue life, Composites, Stainless steel, Modelling, Prediction

Abstract:
This work investigated and predicted the fatigue life durability of Austenitic Stainless Steel 316L due to its importance in plant industries worldwide. Modelling and simulations were performed to clarify the fracture as well as stress distribution using integrated mechanism. Experimental fatigue validations were also carried out to demonstrate the effect of various fatigue life parameters. Various loading conditions with variable load amplitudes were validated utilizing a frequency of 5 Hz and a stress ratio of 0.1. The accuracy of the simulation results were also verified based on the experimental data. High consistencies between the predicted fatigue life and the experimental results were achieved which increases the validity of the built model.

Preparation of Acetylated Guar Gum – Unsaturated Polyester Composites & Effect of Water on Their Properties Pages 147-156 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: David D’Melo, Anagha Sabnis, M.A. Shenoy, Mukesh Kathalewar

DOI: 10.5267/j.ccl.2012.9.001

Keywords: Composites, Fillers, Mechanical Properties Polysaccharides, Thermosets

Abstract:
Guar gum has seen extensive use in blends, however, its application as a filler in thermoset composites has as yet not been investigated. The effect of the addition of guar gum and its acetyl derivatives on the kinetics of water diffusion in unsaturated polyester composites was studied. The effect of water on the mechanical properties of the composites was studied with respect to the nature of filler, filler concentration and time of immersion. All the mechanical properties were observed to decrease on exposure to water. Further, it was observed that acetylated guar gum, with a degree of substitution of 0.21, showed the best mechanical properties, surpassing the other filled composites and that of the pure unsaturated polyester. Thus, acetylated guar gum showed promise as eco-friendly filler in composite formulation.

Designing and manufacturing of a drop weight impact test machine Pages 69-76 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: F. Taheri-Behrooz, M.M. Shokrieh, H.R. Abdolvand

DOI: 10.5267/j.esm.2013.08.001

Keywords: Composites, Drop Weight Test, Impact, Manufacturing, Toughness

Abstract:
A state of the art instrumented Drop Weight Impact Tester Machine was developed in Iran University of Science and Technology which measures the energy absorption of composite materials under impact load. The output of the machine is used to draw load- time graph and calculate the amount of energy absorbed by the specimens. The machine was equipped with various sensor systems to measure the velocity of the impactor just before it contacts the specimen and the amount of contact force, and with a data acquisition system to record the force and time history. Capability of testing according to many different types of standards and capability of studying behaviour of the specimen after impact are two important characteristics of this machine. This designed system, after manufacturing and calibration, was installed and successfully utilized.
