Authors: Nabil Ahmed Mareai Senan

DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2024.1.014

Keywords: Accounting conservatism, Social capital disclosure, Quality of accounting information, Accounting measurement, Corporate social responsibility, Yemeni industrial companies

Abstract:
The paper aims to investigate the direct impact of accounting measurement, Social Capital Disclosure (SCD), and Accounting Conservatism (AC) on the Quality of Accounting Information (QAI), focusing on consistency in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The study involves industrial companies in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a. Hypotheses are developed and tested through the collected data from a questionnaire distributed to 178 employees. Results indicate a positive impact of accounting measurement, SCD, and AC on the quality and reliability of accounting information. However, when considering CSR as a moderating variable, these factors do not show a significant positive effect. The study is limited to industrial companies in Sana’a, and broader implications may require consideration of various other sectors.

In order to achieve the research objectives, the research relies on content analysis approach in examining the annual reports of the companies listed in the Egyptian Stock Exchange from 2015 to 2018. The study depends on measuring the independent variable i.e. disclosure quality of the integrated business reports on building up a disclosure index consisting of 45 items in 8 groups equally weighted, whereas; dependent variables which represents the predictive power of accounting information measured by adopting three different methodologies; namely Accounting Conservatism, Share Prices, and Discretionary Accruals. Concerning to firm value, the study uses Tobin’s Q model to measure the relationship between the quality disclosure of the integrated business reports and the firm value. The results indicate that the quality disclosure of integrated business report leads to increase accounting conservatism and share prices, whereas the statistics analysis reports a negative effect towards discretionary accruals indicating that the quality disclosure of integrated business report leads to decrease in discretionary accruals.

Accounting conservatism: Does business strategy and investment level matter? Pages 709-718 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Nasr Taha Hassan

DOI: 10.5267/j.ac.2021.2.014

Keywords: Business strategy, Accounting conservatism, Investment level, Saudi business environment

Abstract:
This study aims to contribute to the ongoing debate over accounting conservatism through examining whether the corporate strategy can provide a logical justification for the conservatism, and whether this justification is consistent with or contradicts the contractual justification. In this context, the study examines the impact of corporate strategy on the level of conservatism in financial statements, and the impact of the level of conservatism on corporate investment level. Using data from a sample of non-financial Saudi listed companies, the results show that prospector companies are more likely to provide more conservative financial statements, and the level of conservatism influences investment level. The results also show that the integration between corporate strategy and the level of conservatism influence the level of investment. These results suggest that accounting conservatism can be explained in the context of both business strategy and contractual benefits. Also, the results imply that adopting business strategy could influence the financial reporting process.

Authors: Badingatus Solikhah, Jariyah Jariyah

DOI: 10.5267/j.ac.2020.8.024

Keywords: Cost of Equity, Accounting Conservatism, Block Ownership, Board Characteristics, Corporate Governance

Abstract:
This study focuses on investigating the effect of block ownership, board of director diversification, duality of the board of directors, independent level of board of commissionaire, audit committee effectiveness, and accounting conservatism on the cost of equity. The study examines 121 manufacturing companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange. The panel regression indicates that block ownership positively affects the cost of equity. Conversely, accounting conservatism has a negative effect on the cost of equity. The company is expected to increase its accounting conservatism practice as it can reduce the cost of equity. Furthermore, regulators especially Financial Services Authority should protect investors’ rights from block holder expropriation in Indonesia. Companies need to be encouraged to implement corporate governance not merely in compliance laws and regulations but for sustainable business.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between operational risk and accounting conservatism. The criterion used for operational risk in this study is asset volatility and for accounting conservatism, we use Ball and Shivakumar (2005) model [Ball, R., & Shivakumar, L. (2005). Earnings quality in UK private firms: comparative loss recognition timeliness. Journal of Accounting and Economics, 39(1), 83-128.], which analyzes accounting from balance sheet sight. The statistical society used in this study is taken from 15 banks in Tehran Stock Exchange over the period 2006-2012. The research result demonstrates that there was a negative relationship between operational risk and accounting conservatism. In other words, there is a significant negative relationship between operational risk and accounting conservatism. Hence, the results suggest that with an increase (decrease) in operational risk, accounting conservatism decreases (increases).
