DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2018.12.007

Keywords: Supply chain system, Reliability optimization, Minimum cost, Reliability rate

Abstract:
Attributable to high competition in global manufacturing market and outsourcing suppliers, many supply chain systems have become more complex and faced with high risks and low performance. Many financial losses and failures are likely to be due to risks among supply chain's components. As a prescription to improve quality, performance, and profitability of the supply chain, companies would like to measure and optimize the reliability of the entire supply chain system. Also, companies are interested in minimizing the cost of processes and improvement throughout the supply chain system. This paper explains a statistical method that measures the reliability rate of each part in the system as well as the entire supply chain. Moreover, the paper elucidates a mathematical model that improves the reliability of the supply chain through minimization of cost components. The results and findings of this study confirm that the proposed model can be applied to improve the supply chain system. Also, the system can be improved to reach a designed reliability rate as given target to the model. The illustrated methodology can be used as a guide on how to develop a reliable supply chain system plan with low possible costs.

DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2018.12.006

Keywords: Bonding, Bridging, Linking, Managers commitment, Resilience, Supply Chain

Abstract:
Studies on supply chain resilience have been well documented, but most of these studies were conducted at organizational level and hence the role of facilitating managers in the supply chain is conspicuously neglected. The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of tripartite social capital (bonding, bridging and linking) on managers’ resilience building and to examine the underlying mechanism through which these relationships exist. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaire from 452 supply chain managers in Nigeria, a country that has been rocked by series of environmental turbulences. The measurement and structural models were assessed by Partial Lease Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) using SMART-PLS 3 software. The findings suggest that linking social capital influenced manager’s resilience, but bonding and bridging did not. Bonding, bridging and linking influence manager’s commitment. Additionally, manager’s commitment mediated the relationship between tripartite social capital and manager’s resilience, Theoretical, practical and methodological implications were also discussed.

Keywords: Supply Chain Management, Financial Success, SCOR Model, Value Creation

Abstract:
The lack of a proper communication link between supply chain operations and financial performance seems to be due to the difficulty of using the operational metrics of supply chain measurement to reach the financial goals. This study is an attempt to find the effect of supply chain management (SCM) implementation on the financial success of the firms. The study considers the effects of Revenue, Prime Cost, Cash-to-cash cycle period and Return on working capital on the financial performance of the selected firms listed in Istanbul stock exchange from 2012 to 2017. The study divides the sample size based on their financial growth into two groups and using some statistical test measures the difference between two groups, statistically. The results show that there was a significant difference between the mean of high-growth and low-growth companies in terms of SCM implementation. However, the effects of cost, cash cycle and working capital on financial performance were not confirmed.

Optimal replenishment and pricing policies for deteriorating items with quadratic demand under trade credit, quantity discounts and cash discounts Pages 439-456 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Nita Shah, Monika Naik

DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2018.12.003

Keywords: Trade credit, Quantity discounts, Cash discounts, Deteriorating items, Time-price dependent demand rate

Abstract:
Trade credit mainly signifies increase in order quantity when retailer offers a trade credit to the customer. From the customer’s view, granting trade credit not only increases sales and revenue but also increases opportunity cost. So, the choice to offer trade credit is an important managerial consideration. Moreover another significant decision on purchasing is to include (or not to include) cash discount benefits and the motivations behind it. Therefore, the major objective of this article is to derive the inventory models for deteriorating items by maximizing the total profit of the retailer. The models includes the cash discount for the retailer depending on ordering quantity and also cash discount for the customer depending on the time. The customer’s demand is expressed as a function of time and price, which is appropriate for the products for which demand increases initially and after sometime it starts to decrease. Lastly, numerical examples along with sensitivity analysis are done, which extracts some fruitful managerial insights.

A study on sales growth and market value through supply chain Pages 457-470 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Ahmed Nahar Al-Hussaini

DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2018.12.002

Keywords: Business performance, Supply chain, Sales growth, Market value, Kuwait

Abstract:
This paper examines the effect of supply chain on performance indicators including sales growth and market value in the context of manufacturing firms in Kuwait. The dimensions of supply chain; namely strategic supplier partnership, information sharing, and information quality are also added in the model. Along with sales growth and market value, industry leadership, future outlook, overall response to competition, overall business performance, employee’s productivity, process productivity, and success rate in the launching of new product are some of the important indicators for measuring firms’ performance. Both factor analysis and structural equation modelling approaches are applied to the sample of 314 respondents taken from the manufacturing firms in Kuwait. Factor analysis provides some evidence that all the indicators for supply chain and business performance can be considered for the structural modelling and regression analysis. The core findings under structural modelling indicate that both strategic supplier partnership and information sharing had positive and significant impacts on the overall business performance. However, information quality appears to be the insignificant determinant of business performance. For the sales growth and market value, strategic supplier partnership and information sharing are significant determinants obtained through the regression analysis. The originality of the study can be viewed with reference to the selected performance measures and their determination through supply chain management. However, this study is confined only to the manufacturing sector and the services sector can be focused by incorporating additional performance measures and suitable sample size in future studies.

Impact of a reactive capacity production on the firm’s operational management under carbon cap and trade system Pages 471-482 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Jinpyo Lee

DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2018.12.001

Keywords: Carbon cap and trading system, Reactive capacity production, Green Management

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been an increase consensus that the firms’ social responsibility plays an essential role for the success of the firms. To address the need to be socially and environmentally responsible, this paper considers a firm, which makes a production decision under the carbon emission cap and trade system. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of the firm’s flexible operational strategy, called a reactive capacity production strategy, on the firm’s managerial efficiency under the carbon cap and trade system. The reactive capacity production strategy has been widely used for agile response on the market. The study shows that the firm with reactive capacity production strategy under the carbon cap and trade market may choose the first production quantity less than the firm without reactive capacity and provide more profit than the firm without reactive capacity. Also, the study analytically provides the optimal solution for the expected amount of carbon emission traded on the carbon trading market and the expected total amount of carbon emission by the firm with reactive capacity under the carbon cap and trade market.

Keywords: Knowledge sharing, Knowledge donation, Knowledge collection, Individual performance

Abstract:
Knowledge sharing plays an important role in management of universities. Vietnam universities are not highly regarded for their teaching quality and scientific research. It is therefore necessary to promote knowledge sharing through two central processes: knowledge donation and collection as well as individual performance of lecturers. Based on a sample size survey of 312 university lecturers in Vietnam and the methods of analyzing exploration factor (EFA), factor analysis (CFA), structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the hypotheses of the survey, the study determines that two individual factors; namely job satisfaction and other involvement significantly influenced knowledge donation process. One individual factor also positively influences knowledge collection process, knowledge self-efficacy, and lecturers’ willingness to donate knowledge to improve individual performance. Finally, several suggestions for enhancing the knowledge sharing and individual performance of lecturers for university managers are given.

DOI: 10.5267/j.uscm.2018.11.006

Keywords: Workplace ethics, Supply chain, Organization culture ethics, Leadership ethics, Training ethics, Supply chain operations accuracy

Abstract:
Ethics plays an essential role for the success of all business units. These days, it is not sufficient to boost the performance of supply chain companies just by focusing on financial figures but we need to consider the ethical dimensions, particularly at an organizational level. It is evident from the prior investigations that the performance of the supply chain industry in most of the Arab countries has not gained reasonable growth. Most of the Arab countries are facing issues for development good supply chain management in various departments. Bahrain maintains a low performance in the supply chain compared with other Arab countries such as Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia. The logistics index of Bahrain has been decreasing in recent years. Therefore, to address this problem, the objective of this study is to examine the role of workplace ethics in supply chain management among supply chain companies of Bahrain. The study considers three dimensions of ethics, namely; organization culture ethics, leadership ethics, and training ethics. Employees on the managerial positions are selected as the respondents. These respondents are selected from the supply chain companies of Bahrain. Questionnaires are distributed among these employees to collect the data. By using the structural equation modeling, data are analyzed through PLS. The results conclude that workplace ethics has significant contribution in supply chain management. Better implementation of workplace ethics always contributes positively on supply chain management.
