A GRASP algorithm for the bus crew scheduling problem Pages 443-456 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: David Pardo-Peña, David Álvarez-Martínez, John Willmer Escobar

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2024.1.003

Keywords: Bus Crew Scheduling, Grasp Approach, Constructive Algorithm, Satisfaction Worker, Shifts

Abstract:
This paper proposes a GRASP approach for solving the Bus Crew Scheduling Problem (BCSP) to find high-quality solutions within short computing times. The BCSP described the process related to the assignment of drivers and conductors to a bus company's regular daily operation of a mass transit system, seeking to minimize the cost of operation and, at the same time, the improvement of the working environment by considering the satisfaction of the drivers with the assigned shifts. The BCSP has drivers in charge of covering the demand for shifts, with an assignment that contains several constraints, such as minimum and maximum work blocks, minimum rest days, and shift sequences that must not be assigned. The former GRASP algorithm is proposed with a constructive procedure, a solution repair procedure, and two local search operators. Classical instances from the literature have been adapted for the shift assignment problem by adding a satisfaction variable. Besides, the proposed approach has been tested for a real company operating articulated and feeder vehicles. The results show that the satisfaction function adds value to the assignments, substantially improving the work environment and generating favorable results in terms of time and quality of the solution.

Inventory routing problem with backhaul considering returnable transport items collection Pages 837-862 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Julio Cesar Londoño, Juan Jose Bravo Bastidas, Pablo Miranda González, John Willmer Escobar

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2023.6.001

Keywords: Inventory Routing Problem, Returnable Transport Items, Mathematical Modeling, Closed-Loop Supply Chain, Backhaul

Abstract:
The Inventory Routing Problem (IRP) has been highlighted as a valuable strategy for tackling routing and inventory problems. This paper addresses the IRP but considers the forward delivery and the use of Returnable Transport Items (RTIs) in the distribution strategy. We develop an optimization model by considering inventory routing decisions with RTIs collection (backhaul customers) of a Closed-Loop Supply Chain (CLSC) within a short-term planning horizon. RTIs consider reusable packing materials such as trays, pallets, recyclable boxes, or crates. The RTIs represent an essential asset for many industries worldwide. The solution of the model allows concluding that if RTIs are considered for the distribution process, the relationship between the inventory handling costs of both the final goods and RTIs highly determines the overall performance of the logistics system under study. The obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed optimization scheme for solving the combined IRP with RTIs, which could be applied to different real industrial cases.

A new matheheuristic approach based on Chu-Beasley genetic approach for the multi-depot electric vehicle routing problem Pages 555-570 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Andres Arias Londoño, Walter Gil Gonzalez, Oscar Danilo Montoya Giraldo, John Willmer Escobar

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2023.3.002

Keywords: Electric vehicles, Logistics, Matheheuristic, Power distribution system, Transportation network, Vehicle routing problem

Abstract:
Operations with Electric Vehicles (EVs) on logistic companies and power utilities are increasingly related due to the charging stations representing the point of standard coupling between transportation and power networks. From this perspective, the Multi-depot Electric Vehicle Routing Problem (MDEVRP) is addressed in this research, considering a novel hybrid matheheuristic approach combining exact approaches and a Chu-Beasley Genetic Algorithm. An existing conflict is shown in three objectives handled through the experimentations: routing cost, cost of charging stations, and increased cost due to energy losses. EVs driving range is chosen as the parameter to perform the sensitivity analysis of the proposed MDEVRP. A 25-customer transportation network conforms to a newly designed test instance for methodology validation, spatially combined with a 33 nodes power distribution system.

Robust multiobjective scheme for closed-loop supply chains by considering financial criteria and scenarios Pages 361-380 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: John Willmer Escobar, William Adolfo Hormaza Peña, Rafael Guillermo García-Cáceres

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2022.12.004

Keywords: Closed Supply Chain, Net Present Value (NPV), Financial Risk (FR), Epsilon Constraint, Robustness, FePIA

Abstract:
This paper considers the closed-loop supply chain design problem by examining financial criteria and uncertainty in the parameters. A robust multiobjective optimization methodology is proposed by considering financial measures such as maximizing the net present value (NPV) and minimizing the financial risk (FR). The proposed methodology integrates various multiobjective optimization elements based on epsilon constraints and robustness measurements through the FePIA (named after the four steps of the procedure: Feature–Perturbation–Impact–Analysis) methodology. Similarly, an analysis of the parameter variability using scenarios was considered. The proposed method's efficiency was tested with real information from a multinational company operating in Colombia. The results show the effectiveness of the methodology in addressing real problems associated with supply chain design.

Metaheuristic algorithm for the location, routing and packing problem in the collection of recyclable waste Pages 157-172 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Juan Sebastián Herrera-Cobo, John Willmer Escobar, David Álvarez-Martínez

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2022.8.004

Keywords: Location Routing, Packing, Multi-compartment Vehicle Routing Problem, Recyclable Waste, Tabu Search, GRASP

Abstract:
The increasing accumulation of solid waste worldwide has made it necessary to look for alternatives that improve the operation of recyclable waste collection systems to make waste treatment more profitable and eco-friendlier. This paper introduces a new variant of the multi-compartment vehicle routing problem (MCVRP) that considers the rearrangement or relocation of collection points and packing the demand. This problem is called the location packing multi-compartment vehicle routing problem (LPMCVRP) and is developed for a waste collection system using vehicles with flexible compartments. A mathematical formulation of the problem is proposed. A two-phase metaheuristic algorithm based on a tabu search without packing considerations and a variant that integrates a tabu search and a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) scheme with packing constraints have been proposed. A set of instances adapted from the literature is generated to validate the proposed solution strategy. The results obtained show the efficiency of the proposed solution scheme for optimizing collection systems.

A new metaheuristic approach for the meat routing problem by considering heterogeneous fleet with time windows Pages 661-676 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Hernando Barreto Riaño, John Willmer Escobar, Nicolas Clavijo-Buritica

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2022.5.001

Keywords: Urban delivery, Heterogeneous Vehicle Routing, Time Windows, Simulated Annealing, Meat Transportation, Metaheuristics

Abstract:
Guided by a real case, this paper efficiently proposes a new metaheuristic algorithm based on Simulated Annealing to solve the Heterogeneous Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows to deliver fresh meat in urban environments. Our proposal generates an initial feasible solution using a hybrid heuristic based on the well-known Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) solution and, subsequently, refining it through a Simulated Annealing (SA). We have tested the efficiency of the proposed approach in a company case study related to the planning of the transportation of a regional distribution center meat company to customers within the urban and rural perimeter of Bogotá, Colombia. The main goal is to reach a service level of 97% while reducing operational costs and several routes (used vehicles). The results show that the proposed approach finds better routes than the current ones regarding costs and service level within short computing times. The proposed scheme promises to solve the refrigerated vehicle routing problem.

A metaheuristic algorithm based on Ant Colony Based approach for the assigning tasks problem to a workforce with different skills Pages 729-740 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

Authors: Roosvell Camilo Velandia, David Alvarez Martinez, John Willmer Escobar

DOI: 10.5267/j.dsl.2024.3.006

Keywords: Ant Colony Optimization, Multiskill Workforce Scheduling, Unrelated Parallel Machine, Scheduling problem

Abstract:
This paper studies the problem of assigning tasks to a workforce with different skills. The problem is modeled as an unrelated parallel scheduling problem, incorporating sequence-dependent setup times (UPMSPSDST). Exact methods generally are not able to solve real large problems of UPMSPSDST. Hence, this research introduces an efficient, straightforward metaheuristic solution leveraging the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. The objective is to minimize the total completion time while assigning jobs to unrelated parallel machines with sequence-dependent preparation times. The algorithm establishes a threshold for improving the Ants (solutions) to select only promising ants for the improvement phase, thereby reducing the computational effort performed by local search operators. The proposed ACO algorithm maintains a basic structure and could be extended to solve other scheduling problems. A set of test instances available in the literature has been used to validate the efficiency of the proposed methodology. In addition, the results have been compared with the best previously published works. The ACO algorithm improves 30% of the best-known solutions (BKS) and reaches 30% of the BKS. The results show that the average performance of the ACO algorithm exceeds the average performance of the methods used by the best previously published works for the UPMSPSDST.

DOI: 10.5267/j.dsl.2023.12.008

Keywords: Facility location, Vehicle routing problem, Pineapple, Cluster-routing algorithm, Granular reactive search

Abstract:
This paper proposes a matheuristic approach for the location-routing of industrial platforms of the pineapple supply chain problem. We have proposed a three-phase methodology to solve the considered problem. The first phase consists of obtaining the potential supply in terms of suitability and productivity, the potential location of platforms, and the times of the value chain echelons. In the second phase, a mathematical optimization model for the location problem of platforms considering the coverage in terms of timing is proposed. Finally, the final phase proposes a cluster-routing and a granular reactive tabu search approach for the routing phase. The proposed methodology uses official information on production times, speed, and capacity and georeferenced aptitude, spatial, economic, and land yield information for the first time. The proposed approach has been validated through scenarios, particularly pineapple exports for the Colombian country. The obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed approach.

A granular tabu search for the refrigerated vehicle routing problem with homogeneous fleet Pages 135-150 Right click to download the paper Download PDF

DOI: 10.5267/j.ijiec.2021.6.001

Abstract:
The Refrigerated Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (RCVRP) considers a homogeneous fleet with a refrigerated system to decide the selection of routes to be performed according to customers' requirements. The aim is to keep the energy consumption of the routes as low as possible. We use a thermodynamic model to understand the unloading of products from trucks and the variables' efficiency, such as the temperature during the day influencing energy consumption. By considering various neighborhoods and a shaking procedure, this paper proposes a Granular Tabu Search scheme to solve the RCVRP. Computational tests using adapted benchmark instances from the literature demonstrate that the suggested method delivers high-quality solutions within short computing times, illustrating the refrigeration system's effect on routing decisions.
