Abstract: In connection with the global financial and economic crisis, the leading countries have made adjustments to the economic strategies and policies to stabilize the post-crisis economy. The goal of transnationalization is, on the one hand, to reduce quickly the technological gap between domestic producers and their Western competitors, and on the other hand, to win more dynamic demand at lower costs. Ownership structure and market positioning have become two factors that determine the strategic motivation of Transnational corporations (TNCs) and the ways of their expansion. The aim of the study is to analytically generalize the globalization trends of TNCs in the field of production, taking into account industry definitions and point determination of factors influencing the effectiveness of its adaptation in industry. The profiles of adaptation of transnationalization in the sphere of production of Germany, France and the Netherlands were singled out in separate analytical sets, which allowed to reveal heterogeneity of economic practices and branch changes in the sphere of production and to determine the degree of influence of array of variables (factors): Production value and Gross operating surplus profitability of multinational companies, in the sectoral context (domestic production, ISIC Rev 4, 21 industry), as a “basket” of reserve instruments to increase the profitability of production in TNCs. How does financial depth influence corporate performance? Evidence from logistics sector
, Pages: 937-942 Thu-Trang Thi Doan PDF (650K) |
||
Abstract: This paper focuses on analyzing the impact of financial depth on corporate performance. The study data is collected by the author from World Bank statistics and financial statements of companies in the logistics sector, which is a relatively young industry but has great potential for development in Vietnam. Using the Generalized Method of Moment (GMM) to estimate the study model, the author finds out a significant impact of financial depth on corporate performance. In particular, the financial depth from a banking perspective has a positive impact on corporate performance. However, the financial depth from a stock market perspective has not brought positive results to the corporate performance. Not only that, the author also finds out significant impacts of financial leverage and firm size control variables on corporate performance. Therefore, it can be said that the financial depth from the perspective of banks plays an important role in stimulating the corporate performance. Meanwhile, the financial depth from the perspective of the stock market has not shown this role, this is the difference between this study result and the previous studies. The results of this study are important for logistics managers and policymakers in Vietnam. Working capital, profit and profitability: An absolute and relational study of selected leading Indian pharmaceutical firms
, Pages: 951-960 Anis Ali PDF (650K) |
||
Abstract: The working capital of the business organization is the excess of current assets over current liabilities. The working capital (WC) governs sales of the business organization directly while sales define the profits. Working capital activates the fixed resources and utilizes the factors of production and it is a bases for the production of goods and services. Working capital is the factor that plays a vital role in the enhancement of sales turnover and profits, ultimately. The present study considers and covers the financial data of selected Indian pharmaceutical companies for the period 2013-2018 for the study of the impact of profitability of the working capital on sales and profits. Ratio analysis is the base of the study while some statistical techniques are to be used to get the mutual relationship, trend, and co-movement of the WC and sales, earnings before interest, depreciation, and tax (EBIDT), profit before tax (PBT), and profit after tax (PAT) of the selected Indian pharmaceutical companies. The combined inferences of the absolute and relational study explain that the WC governs the profit positively but not proportionately. There is a need to control the indirect expenses or non-manufacturing expenses of the business to enhance the profitability corresponding to WC movement. , Pages: 975-982 Jaspal Singh, Muhammad Sadiq and Kamaljeet Kaur PDF (650K) |
||
Abstract: Accounting is part of everyone’s life and affects all stakeholders who are the users of the accounting information. Organizations are created to serve their stakeholders and governments are supposed to govern, regulate and safe guard the interests of these stakeholders. Whilst accounting frequently experiences behavioral and human governance issues, this study explores the level of ethical sensitivity and its relationship with religiosity among final year accounting students in Malaysia. This study addresses the lack and the need to inculcate religiously orientated topics to be embedded and inculcated in the syllabi of bachelor of accounting, because being intrinsically religious makes an individual ethical. A quantitative research method is applied where questionnaires are administered to final year undergraduate accounting students at selected public and private universities in Malaysia. This study utilized Shaub’s ethical sensitivity questionnaire to measure ethical sensitivity and Allport’s Religiosity Orientation Scale to measure religiosity. Students are found to be ethically sensitive and by using Binary Logistic Regression, it is concluded that ethical sensitivity is influenced by intrinsic religiosity but not influenced by social extrinsic religiosity and personal extrinsic religiosity and may give some insights to the prospective employer on the selection criteria of future accountants and auditors, with regards to ethical conduct. Abstract: We examine the impact of the firm’s life-cycle on board composition of Vietnam's listed firms. The data is balanced and covered over the period 2012-2018 for 442 Vietnam listed firms. We use a fixed-effects regressions analysis to examine the effect of a firm's life-cycle (Lifecycle), and dummy variables of firm's life-cycle (Growth, Mature, Decline) on the board composition (board size, board independence, CEO duality). Our findings show the board composition of Vietnam’s listed firms tends to decrease with the firm's life-cycle. Therefore, the firms need to adjust board composition to a proper level promptly to improve their competitiveness, and consider the supervisory function of the board members is not enough positive in the life-cycle of the firms. Abstract: The yield curve is the building block of fair value in pricing bonds. It has been used by market participants for their asset valuations, Central Bank and Government’s Treasury for monetary, interest rate and borrowing decisions. The official yield curve construction in Indonesia government bond is based on Svensson model which is widely accepted and used by several countries. The objective is to find more accurate fair price from yield curve as the alternative of IBPA government bond curve as the baseline. This research takes observation on three alternative yield curve models in comparison with the baseline Svensson Model to price several series of benchmark and non-benchmark bonds. Fair price is further tested with One-Way ANOVA and Post Hoc in order to find the significance between models. The results show that alternative models are performing better in determining the fair value prices of the government bonds compared to the baseline model. Abstract: The study aims to analyze the effect of current ratio (CR), return on equity (ROE), net profit margin (NPM), total asset turnover (TATO) and debt to asset ratio (DAR) on firms’ value. The sample of the research is the 4 cable sub-sector companies from the manufacturing industry which are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for the 2014-2018 period and they are analyzed using panel data regression method. Empirical findings of the study indicate that ROE had a negative influence on firm value, while NPM, TATO, and DAR had positive effects on firm value. However, the CR ratio had no effect on firm value. Taken together all financial performance variables affect the value of the company. The results of the study have implications that the value of the company can be improved if the company still maintains a balanced capital structure between debt and equity, provided that debt is used to finance assets that are productive and efficient so that they can generate profits. CEO inside debt compensation determinants and bank performance: Empirical evidence from Europe
, Pages: 1139-1150 Bassam Al-Own PDF (650K) |
||
Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of inside debt compensation on bank performance, and identify the determinants of inside debt compensation. Using a sample of thirty European Banks during the period of 2006-2011, this paper presents evidence to support the existing literature that states that debt-based compensations plans have a significant impact on banks’ performance. The results imply that banks rely more on a debt-based compensation as leverage increases. A positive association has also been documented between debt-based compensation usage and both CEO age and bank size. The human capital of CEOs has been found to be negatively related to debt-based compensation. The empirical findings show that there is a significant negative relationship between inside debt compensation and banks' performance. Specifically, CEOs paid with a higher level of inside debt compensation were more likely to engage in lower risk-seeking behavior, such as adopting more conservative policies and investment choices. Thus, inside debt compensation plans can influence the risk-taking of managers, which may have the potential to significantly affect bank performance. Generally, inside debt compensation can reduce risk-shifting problems and lead to behavior which positively impacts debt-holders, as less risk-taking can directly contribute to a lower probability of default. The findings of this paper present important implications for many interested parties throughout the European Union, such as regulators, investors, and standards setters, whose aim is to enhance the soundness of the banking sector. , Pages: 1161-1166 Khaled Alsaifi, Abdullah M. Al-Awadhi and Salah Alhammadi PDF (650K) |

Abstract: Turkey experienced an extreme political event on Friday July 15 2016 in the form of an attempted coup. This paper examines the impact of this event on the components of the Banks Index of the Istanbul Stock Exchange using event study methodology. Results show that the banks’ abnormal returns (ARs) were a statistically significant negative from +2 to +6 days with the peak on day +3 when the government declared a state of emergency. Furthermore, when the banks’ stocks are compared with the overall market, they display lower volatility during the study period. These findings evidence the importance attached to political factors and particularly political instability in shaping investment decision making. The impact of real effective exchange rate volatility on trade balance in Vietnam
, Pages: 1167-1172 Nguyen Thi My Linh and Nguyen Thi Kim Lien PDF (650K) |

Abstract: The study is conducted to examine the impact of real effective exchange rate volatility on the trade balance in Vietnam from 2002 to 2019 by using the VAR (vector autoregression) model. The volatility of real effective exchange rate is calculated through the GARCH (1,1) model based on the quarterly data (collected by Bruegel, Europe) of the Vietnamese currency with 143 major trading partners of Vietnam. The research result shows that the current trade balance was negatively affected by the volatility of the past trade balance with the lag from 1 quarter to 4 quarters. Especially, the study finds that the volatility of real effective exchange rate with the lag of 2 reduced the trade balance in Vietnam. This is the particularity of Vietnam – a country pursuing a floating exchange rate policy under the control of the government.
